Introduction

Hello, I'm Doug, the owner of Lucky Dog Woodcraft & Handyman Services, LLC. I've been doing woodwork, carpentry and household repairs for over 40 years. I have experience in all phases of home construction and repair. I was taught carpentry by my father, a teacher, master carpenter and cabinet maker, who taught me to never cut corners and always give your customers more than they expect. Whether remodeling a bathroom, installing a light, or simply fixing a leaky toilet, your 100% satisfaction is my bottom line. Licensed, bonded and insured.

Q&A

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

unfold fold
For smaller jobs - two to three hours- I charge a straight hourly rate of $55.00 per hour, with a two-hour minimum, plus materials. I also charge for mileage if over twenty miles from my shop in Hillsboro. I will provide a detailed estimate for more involved projects, usually those with multiple repairs or taking more than a day or two to complete. If I provide materials, clients pay the same price I do, plus my hourly rate for getting them.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

unfold fold
Typically, I’ll talk to a client on the phone to get a better perspective of the job. I may ask for photos of the job. If a follow-up onsite evaluation is necessary, I’ll arrange a time to do so. I want to be sure the client is satisfied with the plan before proceeding.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

unfold fold
As I’ve mentioned, most of my training is on the job. I am a licensed residential limited contractor and regularly engage in continuing education to learn new processes and techniques.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

unfold fold
I started in my father’s workshop when I was about seven years old. He was a master carpenter and cabinet maker who started me out on a scroll saw then progressing on to other tools. From framing a house, to finish carpentry, I learned from the best.

What types of customers have you worked with?

unfold fold
I would say that 90% of my customers are homeowners needing help with maintenance or repairs. The remaining ten percent cover a broad range. I’ve worked on older homes and new, starter homes and multi-million dollar mansions. If the job is more than I can take on, I will say so up front and provide a referral if I know a pro that can do the work.

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

unfold fold
Learning how to, and then servicing an antique Shepard elevator in an old Portland mansion. Finding a service manual was a challenge (thanks Google and Tulane University Archives) and I had to reach out to a local machinist friend to replacate an impossible to find part. It now runs like new!

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

unfold fold
Ask for examples of their work and their experience.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

unfold fold
1. Does the professional have the time and proper skill set for the job? 2. Ask them to describe what they will do and how long it will take. Remember that repair jobs can be tricky, you never know what you may find until you take it apart, so time to completion may be given as a range. 3. How much will it cost? Is the price firm, or does it take into account contingencies?
