I am a multi-instrumentalist, which gives me a different perspective with regards to how each instrument functions in the context of a song or a band. I also customize every lesson to fit the needs of each student. I feel that this creates a learning environment that inspires a disciplined practice routine. In addition to my love for music, I enjoy the opportunity to share ideas and concepts that pertain to music, but can be applied to every facet of life.

Through my own trials and years of experience, I have developed a unique intuitive approach to jazz improvisation, and a path to effortless playing and greater musical fulfillment. About Me: I have been performing as a professional jazz musician and teaching guitar for the past 15 years (and have been playing for the past 27 years). I'm a very dedicated teacher and have a clear and thorough way of teaching jazz improvisation (among many other styles) as well as accompaniment, theory, reading, and many other aspects of playing music. For me, improvised music is what I am most interested in and passionate about. In my lessons, instead of focusing only on scales, modes, arpeggios, etc., I also focus on training students to play what they hear - and to channel music that is true to them. I love using recordings and transcriptions (learning solos of jazz masters) to help students develop a sense of jazz language, so they can "speak" in an informed, intelligent, and musical way. We can also discuss various possible challenges to expressing creativity, and how to work through them. As I continue to work on my own inner connection - being able to hear what I play and stay in the flow state - I love sharing what I continually learn with students. Hi! I’m Wes Nelson, and I am a professional bass and guitar teacher. I can teach whatever style of music you're interested in (indie, rock, pop, funk, jazz, etc.) as well as songwriting, sightreading, production, and music theory. All skill levels are welcome, and no experience is required. My teaching combines hands-on playing with theory so that you not only learn your favorite music, but how it works. My purpose as your teacher is to help you realize and achieve your goals as an aspiring musician. I have 18 years of music experience as both a bass player and guitarist and have an MFA in music from CalArts. I have extensive international touring, studio, and performance experience and have played alongside artists such as Mike Stern, zzzahara, Ny Oh, LP Giobbi, DJ Tennis, Bonzie, Shearling, and Randy Brecker and have recorded at studios such as East West, Sunset Sound, and Capitol Records. I have 10+ years of experience teaching privately and in public high schools. All of this has given me a deep perspective on what it means to be a musician. Music has deeply enriched my life and my job is to help it enrich yours regardless of your skill level or goals. Lessons are available both in-person and online.
