Q&A

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

unfold fold
My base DJ rate starts at $100/hour, with packages available for weddings, private events, clubs, and corporate functions. Add-ons like lighting, MC services, extended sets, and travel are available for an additional fee. I also offer custom mix creation, bundle discounts, and flexible pricing for multi-hour or full-day bookings. Every event is different, so I'm happy to work within your budget when possible — just reach out with the details, and let’s build a package that fits your vibe and vision.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

unfold fold
When you book with Slay Positive, it starts with a quick conversation to understand your event's vibe, audience, and vision. I’ll ask about the date, location, type of event, music preferences, and any special moments you want to highlight. From there, I’ll recommend a package or customize one that fits your needs — including options for MC services, lighting, curated playlists, and more. Once we lock in the details, I send over a contract and deposit request to secure your date. Before the event, we’ll confirm your final playlist, schedule, and any special announcements or transitions you’d like. On event day, I arrive early for setup and soundcheck, and then it’s showtime — high energy, smooth transitions, and nonstop good vibes.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

unfold fold
I began my DJ journey out of a deep love for music and culture, blending genres and curating experiences that move people. I’ve trained in live mixing using industry-standard equipment (Serato DJ) and continue to sharpen my skills through workshops, mentorships, and hands-on experience at clubs, private events, and festivals. In addition to my DJ work, I have a background in marketing and psychology, which helps me read the crowd, craft the right energy for every moment, and deliver a vibe-focused, seamless experience. My training is ongoing — music and sound evolve, and I evolve with it.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

unfold fold
My DJ journey started from a love of music, movement, and meaningful energy. I’ve always been the go-to person for curating playlists and setting the vibe — whether at family gatherings, college events, or pop-ups. Eventually, I turned that passion into a profession. After investing in equipment and learning the craft through trial, error, and community support, I launched Slay Positive to bring intentional, culturally-rooted, and feel-good music experiences to every event. What began as a creative outlet quickly grew into a purpose: helping people celebrate life through sound.

What types of customers have you worked with?

unfold fold
I’ve worked with a diverse mix of clients — from brides and grooms planning their dream weddings to corporate teams hosting company parties, promoters organizing club nights, and families celebrating milestones like birthdays, graduations, and baby showers. I’ve also DJed community pop-ups, cultural events, wellness experiences, and private house parties. No matter the occasion, I bring the same commitment: to create a custom sound that fits the energy, the audience, and the moment.

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

unfold fold
One of my favorite recent projects was a graduation party where I curated a 5-hour DJ set that flowed through decades of music — from 90s R&B and 2000s hip-hop to Afrobeats, Amapiano, and Southern throwbacks. The client wanted each hour to feel like a different vibe, so I collaborated with multiple DJs and built custom crates for seamless transitions and energy shifts throughout the night. From planning to performance, the project took about a week to prep — including music curation, cue points, setlists, and visuals for social promo. The event was a hit, with the crowd dancing the entire time and even requesting an extra hour. It was the perfect mix of intentional planning and in-the-moment energy — exactly what Slay Positive stands for.

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

unfold fold
When looking for a DJ, don’t just focus on who has the loudest speakers or flashiest setup — look for someone who understands your vibe, your audience, and your vision. A great DJ can read the room, shift the mood, and keep the energy flowing all night. Ask about their process, how they prepare for events, and whether they’re open to custom requests. Look for someone who’s versatile, communicative, and passionate — someone who can not only mix music but create a moment. And most importantly, choose someone who listens to you and wants to make your event unforgettable, not just play a set.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

unfold fold
Before reaching out to a DJ, it helps to have a few key details ready. Ask yourself: What type of event is this? (Wedding, birthday, corporate, etc.) What’s the date, time, and location? How long do you need DJ services? What’s the vibe you want? (Chill, high energy, cultural, throwback, modern, etc.) Are there any “must-play” songs or artists — or songs you don’t want? Do you need an MC, lighting, sound equipment, or custom mixes? What’s your ideal budget range? Coming in with these answers will help your DJ tailor the perfect experience — and make your planning process smoother from the start.
