Introduction

HI! I'm Dan Ray, award-winning Greensboro, NC-based vocalist and multi-instrumentalist. I've been playing music around the Triad for about 15 years, and was honored to be voted YES! Weekly's Best Musician in the Triad and Best Guitarist in the Triad in 2019. I perform solo acoustic covers from all eras and in all styles for bars and venues, private parties, pool clubs, corporate and civic events, weddings, and any other event you can think of. I also host and run super fun Live Acoustic Karaoke shows, where you and your guests come up to the mic and put on the show with me, and Live Acoustic Pub Trivia, a fast, fun, highly engaging name-that-tune music trivia game. I've also got a full four-piece band called THE NEW STRANGE, and I co-host the Cover Band Confidential podcast. I'm also known around the area for the band I was in before the Pandemic, The Clanky Lincolns.

Q&A

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

A solo acoustic show for a private event is usually in the $300-$500 range, depending on travel and event details. I can do solo acoustic shows of typically three hours. I can cover either broad general material, or a song list targeted to your specific audience. I've also got a great female singer and fiddle player I work with as an acoustic duo. Live Acoustic Karaoke is typically a three hour show where you and your guests come up to the mic and sing with me. I'll give as much or as little help as the singer needs. Live Acoustic Pub Trivia is usually an hour and a half (I've discovered that's about the amount of attention people have for it). Every team chooses a hand percussion instrument. I'll start playing a song, and when you recognize it, you "ring in" with your cowbell or tambourine or whatever. Highly interactive and competitive and a huge amount of fun. We can do targeted themes like 80s, 90s, Female Artists, One-Hit Wonders, etc.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

unfold fold
First we'll discuss date, time, and location. If there are any details about the audience that would influence the music I'd pick, we can absolutely discuss that. I keep around 500 songs in rotation, so I can hit a broad range of age groups and demographics. I'll take a 1/3 booking fee to hold the date, and the balance is due when I arrive at the event. Expect me to arrive 1 hour before start time. I'll need a flat and solid stage area, and one standard power outlet. After the show I'm usually packed up and out within half an hour.

What types of customers have you worked with?

unfold fold
In addition to playing private parties for individuals, I've played events the Greensboro Junior League, and Revolution Mill in Greensboro, poolside at several local pool clubs, countless birthdays and weddings, and a few fun nights at frat parties in Greensboro and Chapel Hill. You can catch me at bars and clubs all around the Triad. My Facebook is the best place to see my latest schedule.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

unfold fold
It's good to have some sense of the flow of the party. For instance, if the first hour is dinner followed by dancing, the musicians need to know that so they can plan a laid-back first set of background music, and then crank up the party.
