Q&A

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

unfold fold
Where I teach, students can apply for scholarship. For students who do not have a scholarship, talk to me in advance, before lessons begin as far as meeting whatever needs you have. Advanced notice helps and time of year. Early fall and right before summer.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

unfold fold
Lots of listening to their needs and concerns. Focusing on goals that they have and just having fun with music! I do ask that students consult me before they purchase an instrument or accessories.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

unfold fold
Suzuki teacher training for all violin books 1-10. Teacher training for advanced students with Burton Kaplan and Doris Pruecil. My college teacher, Shirley Givens (Adventure in Violinland) who taught violin to the children of world famous violinists Pinkas Zucherman and Itzak Perlman.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

unfold fold
I’m a professional violinist with a music degree in violin performance. After obtaining my degree I took teacher training. School music teachers who knew me and know that I teach violin helped me get started by recommending that parents contact me for violin lessons.

What types of customers have you worked with?

unfold fold
Ages from 2 years on up to adults and professionals.

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

unfold fold
I am most fond of the moments when I see a student learn a new skill or overcome a habit which allows them to improves. Most recently a student improved their posture in a matter of minutes.

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

unfold fold
If you have a friend with a child that plays violin, ask them how they like their lessons and how practice is going. Ask orchestra teachers at school. If you talk to someone who teaches violin you might ask how many students they have and how they were educated in music themselves because that’s going to influence how they teach. Because much of what students learn is from hearing their teacher play, see if they will play for you. Especially if they do not play regularly professionally or in the community.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

unfold fold
1. Do they have recommendations on where to get an instrument. Does the teacher know what a good violin or viola is? If they say they do, ask them what makes a violin good. They should be able to explain it. 2. Are they required to practice on their own. If so, how much time per week. 3. How long are the lessons. 4. Can you commit to at least a year? 5. Is your family on board with supporting the student taking lessons. 6. Does the student really want to learn? It’s okay if they aren’t super excited, try to encourage them in the style that they like to learn: “You can play for grandmother” or “I wonder how the violin works” 7. Are you excited about supporting your student in learning? Do you like Music when it’s played really well and do you have music playing in the house? 8. There may be rough patches or times when students don’t practice. Are you committed to showing up at the lessons to get the motor going again? 9. Do you understand their policy for lessons that are missed.
