Q&A

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

unfold fold
I am a professional musician. I have expensive equipment that I bring to your event in a dedicated vehicle. I have a degree in music and have paid for many years of lessons. I have a list of songs that I have invested countless practice hours on. I will likely need to invest several more hours for a unique performance at your event. I once heard a colleague say "You're not paying me for the music. That is a gift from God. You're paying me to rehearse, travel, set up, tear down and be a professional at your event".

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

unfold fold
Initial contact is usually made via text or email. I like to set up a phone conversation or in person meeting right away. I find this gives everyone a chance to communicate more effectively and start building the relationship. We can discuss the customer's vision and what I can do to help make that happen.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

unfold fold
I have a degree in music education and countless lessons. For over 3 decades I have played thousands of events including theatrical presentations, bar room rock and roll parties, weddings, dinner ambient music, church/worship, high school/collage musicals.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

unfold fold
Music has been a passion of mine from an early age. I bought my first guitar with money I earned mowing yards. I bought my first lessons when I got a full time job. My passion for music goes beyond "hobby" status. It is very expensive to buy instruments and gear. So, I began looking for work as a musician. For 2 decades I made a living solely from teaching private lessons and playing gigs and events. I now do mostly solo performances and run my YouTube channel.

What types of customers have you worked with?

unfold fold
I have worked with a wide variety of customer/clients. Every situation is somewhat unique. I've worked with bar managers, church clergy, bride's/wedding planners, city event coordinators and "Center for the Arts" concert planners.

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

unfold fold
Over the years I have done everything from concert/recitals with my students to Rock Orchestra concerts for charity. I have recorded three studio albums and played in many settings. But lately, I'm focused on my solo performances. Be it classical/fingerstyle wedding music or singing acoustic rock with a kick drum pad, I'm all about entertaining and enjoying touching the emotions of others with my musical capabilities.

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

unfold fold
Music has the power to awaken our emotions. You want live music because it feels "real". You want your guests to feel something powerful. Live music is much like anything else, "You get what you pay for". Not all musicians and entertainers are the same. If you want your event to be a great memory for your guests, don't leave the entertainment to an ameture.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

unfold fold
What vibe or mood do I want to set for my event? Where will I have the musician(s) set up? Is the event outdoors? and will the musicians be covered in case of rain? (instruments and rain do not mix) Do I have it in my budget for this event? (please don't insult a professional by asking them to play for exposure) Will electricity be available?
