What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

unfold fold
Listen to their music collection and see if you get the "feeling" you want at your event. Music is a feeling. Tell the artist what you have in mind, songs you like and the tone you want to set. A musician can create a personalized set for you. Experience is important when a situation requires being ready for any situation. A solo artist can bring more of a personal feel to an event.
