Introduction

I specialize in building and tiling showers and tub surrounds, but also enjoy installing kitchen back splashes. I am very detail oriented, and provide tile design ideas and remarkable craftsmanship at a reasonable price. I have 19 years of experience as a tile installer, and am good at minimizing the disruption that comes with a remodelling project in your home.

Q&A

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

unfold fold
I charge the maket rate, usually by the square foot. There are less expensive installers out there, as well as more expensive. But I know of nobody who charges less than I do, while providing the quality, durability, and craftsmanship that I build into each installation.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

unfold fold
I will meet with you in person at the project location. Here we will discuss the project, and I will take measurements in order to accurately bid the project. I will then work up an estimate, and email it to you. Usually this takes several days to turn around.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

unfold fold
During 2003- 2004 I apprenticed under a professional tile installer before I began working for homeowners. I have 19 years of experience remodelling bathrooms and kitchens all over the Portland area. I have built and installed tile in a large number of showers, tub surrounds, floors, and kitchen counters and back splashes. I have often worked alongside General Contractors, as well as homeowners.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

unfold fold
I was painting murals in Portland around 2000 - 2002. There was a local ordinance at the time that demanded a hefty fee be payed to PDX for every mural, so I began painting houses. I had to hire a tile installer to install a floor in one of the houses I was painting. I watched him, and found tile installation to be more interesting, creative, and challenging, so I began working for him in January of 2003.

What types of customers have you worked with?

unfold fold
Most of my customers are either homeowners looking to remodel, or General Contractors.

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

unfold fold
Find a tile installer who is willing to explain to you the advantages of using one substrate verses another on a floor or in a shower, as well as the reasons for the methods they use. If they are willing to explain themselves, it means they will not cut corners during the installation that will not be apparent to the homeowner until months or years later. I would hire a tile installer who is thorough, rather than one who does things quickly; there is a lot of work (that can be done carefully or not) that the homeowner never sees underneath the finished project. the It is also advantageous if the tile installer provides design ideas. An experienced installer will know what color, size, amd material of tile looks the best, and requires the least maintenance in a given project or remodel. If you hire an interior designer, definitely make sure to have them consult with the tile installer before finalizing your tile choices.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

unfold fold
It is a good idea to visit the tile showroom at Contract Furnishings Mart, Daltile or one of the other tile dealers on NW Yeon. Doing so will give you a sense of what your options are, and how much tile costs. For instance, Natural stone is more expensive both to purchase and install than porcelain or ceramic tile. It also requires periodic sealing to maintain its lustre and stain resistance. That said, a carefully installed natural stone shower looks incredible. Also it is important to understand that remodelling projects are disruptive, construction delays are common, and for some projects you will have one or several Contractors in your home every day for an extended period.
