Introduction

I reopened my Manhattan location (near the Empire State Building) so I am available to meet with clients. Please note -- I am only licensed in the State of New York. So if you are not a New York resident, you will have to look for someone else. I can give you referrals to quality attorneys. I am a bankruptcy attorney who has devoted his entire professional career to representing debtors, creditors, and trustees in both corporate and personal bankruptcy proceedings, ranging from individual cases to some of the largest corporate bankruptcy proceedings filed in the United States. I have more than 300 cases filed in the New York metropolitan area. I am experienced in all facets of Chapter 7, 11, and 13 cases, out-of-court restructurings, and refinancing transactions. I regularly appear at court hearings, meetings with trustees, pre-trial conferences, depositions, appeals, and arbitrations. I personally attend hearings at the Manhattan, Brooklyn, Central Islip, White Plains, Poughkeepsie, and Binghamton bankruptcy courthouses. I am involved with a client's case from start to finish. I interview and meet with clients, prepare their papers, discuss what will happen at court, and attend all hearings or conferences. Unlike other attorneys, I do not outsource my work or appearances to anyone else except in rare circumstances. What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

My fee depends on the type of case and its complexity. I believe my fees are reasonable. I do not gouge or exploit my clients. They are usually under enough stress as it is when they seek me out.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

I establish a working relationship by listening to the client describe his or her situation. I ask questions and we discuss the information that has to be gathered so that we can proceed. We also decide what is the appropriate path to take and figure out the steps that will get us to our goal. We continue to work together either in live person meetings, over the phone and via email. I am flexible in my approach.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

Besides my legal education, I take courses and attend seminars and presentations on a nearly monthly basis to keep current on developing issues. I also discuss with my colleagues issues that arise in our cases. I also pay attention to developments in the world at large to expand my knowledge base about the issues that my clients face.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

I became an attorney after working as a paralegal at a small bankruptcy firm for several years after graduating from college. I learned that enjoyed helping clients to solve problems and generally interact with clients, the court and other parties.

I represent individuals and corporate entities.

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

I handled two lengthy cases - one person hired me who had previously filed for bankruptcy. We decided to wait to see if we could make it until the 8 year prohibition against filing a new chapter 7 could pass because the client could not afford to make any payments in a chapter 13. We successfully held on for 2 1/2 years while dealing with taxing authorities and creditors commencing lawsuits. Ultimately, we succeeded in getting her chapter 7 filed without any issue. In the second case, the chapter 7 lasted for nearly a year as we worked to enable the clients to keep their home, deal with issues regarding their taxes and make payments to the trustee for non-exempt assets.

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

Make sure you feel a connection to your attorney - you are resting your financial fate in his or her hands and you must feel confident in their abilities to represent you. What you pay is a secondary consideration. You are looking to obtain a valuable right -- the right to discharge your liability for certain debts. You need to be willing to pay money for that right as well as be completely honest about the extent of your assets and liabilities.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

That we take our work seriously, we care about our clients, and most of all, we need total candor from clients. Full disclosure leads to the best results.
