Q&A

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

unfold fold
Our pricing is competitive and we only use excellent products that we know we can count on. There is no charge for consultations or onsite assessments. We offer 5% off for prompt payment via cash, check, or ACH on most jobs. Additional discounts are very common, but depend on the particular products in the quote.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

unfold fold
We usually will meet onsite with the homeowner first to go over the scope of the installation project. In some cases we ask for a follow up meeting at the Amp AV showroom to help make product selections and go into greater detail. At our showroom it is easier to educate the customer about system components and options. From there, we will create a quote or estimate within about 2 business days (on average, but bigger jobs can take longer to estimate). We charge a 60% deposit for any new customer project prior to scheduling and ordering the equipment. The final 40% payment is due within 10 days of receiving the balance invoice after completion of the work.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

unfold fold
Hi, I'm Greg, owner of Amp AV. I have 15 years of low voltage and audio video experience in both residential and commercial systems design, installation, project management, and programming. Amp AV is a licensed Low Voltage Contracting business in Arizona with me as the qualifying party. I have received the AVIXA CTS certification and I am a regular attendee of important trade shows and trainings including CEDIA, InfoComm, and IWCE. My awesome technicians ad I are certified Control4, Savant, and Lutron programmers. We are experts when it comes to technology systems design and installation.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

unfold fold
Greg here, owner of Amp AV. I started this company in 2019 when I decided that I could deliver better service and be happier for it by branching out on my own. I had been doing AV work for nearly 10 years, and took the leap. I got into this type of work when a family friend hired me right out of high school. I had no idea what I was getting myself into or that I would fall in love with technology installation and turn it into my career.

What types of customers have you worked with?

unfold fold
Amp AV offers both residential and commercial services, but residential work is the bigger chunk of what we do, including both retrofit and new construction projects. Our ideal customer is someone who values their time above all else. This is the type of person that hires a pro based on trusting that they will do it right the first time, not based on who provides the cheapest possible price.

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

unfold fold
Our team just installed a Nexus 21 drop-down TV lift in a customer's patio ceiling with a 75" TV. It lowers vertically, and then rotates into different preset positions to be viewed from different seating areas. It took a day to build in the ceiling pocket (it was a nice excuse to buy a framing nailer), and a day to install and set up the lift. It turned out awesome!

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

unfold fold
My advice is to be upfront about what you are looking to spend (or not spend). Home entertainment is never apples to apples between different companies or bids. You could get a quote for a 7.1 surround sound system that's $6,000 from one company, and $16,000 from another. Depending on what you're expecting to spend, you wasted someone's time (and yours) and now you need another opinion from a third or fourth company. No one is trying to rip anyone off or sell anyone short. We are simply doing our best to gauge your expectations as to the caliber of the system to be installed. There are an infinite number of product combinations and product tiers. Integrators like us will simply give you the best within your budget. If you don't have any idea what things cost, that's okay! Not many do. A good company will have some standard packages or price ranges for lots of common install scenarios to help you determine what is realistic. If someone's quote seems outrageous, don't ghost them! Give them a chance to better understand what you deem to be reasonable. I've been fortunate enough to get to know the owners of several of the best AV installation outfits valley-wide, and we all seem to have these things in common; we all root for one another to succeed, and we succeed by doing right by the customer.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

unfold fold
Be sure to go with a licensed pro. Lots of AV installers out there do not have the appropriate contracting license, insurance, or contractors' bond. Even if they have general liability insurance, it won't cover that company or you, the homeowner, if they are engaging in a task that they are not licensed to perform (such as running wires through the walls and attic, drilling through wall studs, etc.).
