Q&A

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

I typically charge under market value for shoots which will not take too much time. It’s not about the money for me right now. It’s about the experiences and pleasure of shooting.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

I like to lay out the expectations of a shoot on a shared excel which I’ve created to have a collaborative work environment before the shoot. Keeps everything in order and I don’t miss an expected shot.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I’ve self taught myself photography/videography. I’m an engineer my trade so technology and learning is easy. It’s just the practice that’s necessary for improvement.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

I had some practice shooting commercials and other videos with unrelated work. Finally had an opportunity with a friend and we made it happen. Now it’s something I enjoying exploring and improving every time.

What types of customers have you worked with?

All types, couples, friends, coworkers, very demanding people, laid back people and people who have no idea what they want until after you shoot. All are unique but all are manageable.

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

Music videos. I think it’s fun and creative. Takes close to a month total for good product but little of that time is shooting. Planning and editing is the most work.

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

I would say ask a lot of questions ahead of time. Make sure your expectations match the agreement for the project. Write assumptions down for clarity.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

Think about the value of the work. Everyone wants things for cheap but don’t want cheap work. Artist are incentivized to do good work for the right money. Nobody wants to be under valued. Be upfront about expectations.
