What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

unfold fold
I have an Masters in Fine Arts with an emphasis in photography, over 25 years as a photographer, and 16 years as a professional photographer.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

unfold fold
I always loved photography, even since I was a little kid. Once, for History Day competition (think Science Fair-like) I presented the history of the camera - I think I was in the 6th grade. When I was 16, I found a Canon AE-1 film camera at a pawn shop, and used that until I moved into digital SLR cameras in 2008. I photographed several friend's weddings in the early 2000 for free (yes FREE), then I eventually came to the realization that I could charge people! I started the business in 2006 and simply grew from there. Oh, and I still have that original Canon AE-1 camera too :)

What types of customers have you worked with?

unfold fold
Introverts, extroverts, kids, adults, corporate executives, families, newborns - from headshots to couples to engagements to weddings to maternity to newborn to family photos to graduation photos...and now I'm starting to get the kids of Clients I photographed years ago at their wedding, so it'll start all over again with the next generation!

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

unfold fold
I have 10-15 session a week: -> Weekdays are typically headshots and personal sessions -> Weekends often book weeks in advance and are typically family sessions and weddings - long holiday weekends book months in advance!

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

unfold fold
DO NOT focus on price - look at experience, reviews, and most importantly, the value and quality a professional photographer offers. Ask yourself "would I rather pay for 10-15 excellent photos from a professional and then choose one or two to hang on my wall, or 50-60 'snapshot' photos from an amateur not even worth sharing with friends?" More experienced photographers will charge a premium price, with a correspondingly high expectation level for their products. Less experienced photographers will charge less, but you may not know the quality you'll receive. Hire the best photographer you can afford. And read reviews!

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

unfold fold
Questions to think about: -> What do you expect from your session? -> Do you already have ideas about your session, or will you need creative inspiration? -> If you find a pro that is higher than your budget but meets everything you want in a session, are you willing to increase your budget? -> Do you only want digitals, or will you also want printed products such as canvas prints or enlargements? Questions to ask a Professional Photographer: -> What is their overall experience? -> What is their experience with what I need? -> Do they have varied images on their online portfolio showing multiple styles? -> Where are your reviews and testimonials? Weddings and Events: -> What is their backup plan? -> What is their backup equipment? Business Questions -> Are they a legal business and insured? General business insurance and liability insurance is there to protect both the photographer and you! -> Do they work out of a studio and/or office, or are they only an "on location" photographer?
