Introduction

Love, emotion, Family We have all heard that "home is where the heart is" and I think that your family is what is in your heart. Think about this for a moment, why is it that you work so hard?! It is because you truly love your family! I don't know of anything better than a family portrait to represent that love, that bond, the emotions, and every aspect that makes up relationship that is a family. I love creating beautiful images that reflect the personality of families. We also create photographs of individuals with this same thought in mind. It is such a joy and so rewarding to do what you love for a living! I have been creating beautiful, emotional portraits full-time for well over 20 years and I love it more and more each passing year because I have grown in my understanding of what family is and what it represents.

Q&A

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

unfold fold
Although we usually do not use this process for our business portraits, all others start out with a visit to talk about the vision you have for your photographs -how should they look, what are they supposed to say to those that view them? We call this the "design consultation". We do this because we want to know our clients. Some photographers are willing to just show up and press the button, but that's just a snapshot, and our clients are hiring us to do more than show up and press a button -there uncle or neighbor could do that. We get to know what our clients want -and often they don't know! So together we create it. And based on our 20+ years and thousands of portraits, our clients appreciate it!

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

unfold fold
I am constantly reading, visiting with, and studying other photographers -I enjoy it, but I feel that I have to, because I am the one that over 2000 San Antonio photographers have come to for their own continuing education, plus I have a photography/business coach to keep me on the cutting edge.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

unfold fold
I was only six years old when I knew that I wanted to be a photographer! It is wonderful being able to work with amazing clients who are at their best -smiling, in the best mood, and looking great!

What types of customers have you worked with?

Family Portraits Individual portraits (professional head shots, High School Seniors, glamour, pin-up, boudoir)

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

unfold fold
Portraits (family): Do not cut corners! Of course if you don't do this all the time, you really don't know what that means! The cliche is true, "You don't know what you don't know"! If you are going to pay a professional, they should do more than a neighbor or friend with a nice camera. Professional photography is not showing up and pressing a button, it is planning, knowledge via constant education, and passionate customer service. This type of dedication takes time, and since time is money, this type of dedicated photographer will charge a fair amount for their work (I also teach a class on "price lists for photographers"). But there are times when a fast-food-level photographer is the right choice and then there is a right time for the country club level photographer. If you get a family portrait created often (weekly/monthly) then it is appropriate to hire the lower end photographer, but when its special, you have to choose the most qualified to create the representation of your family. If your husband says he's going to take you on a special date are you thinking McDonald's? Your family is WAY more important; choose a photographer that will take the time to get to know you before the session. Yes this takes more time, but how else can a photographer get to know their client and create a photograph that will represent them? You may be thinking, well we are a busy family, we don't have time for that. So I ask you this, what are you working so hard for? Isn't it your family? So make the time to do this right.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

What is the end result/How is the photograph going to be used? Is it going to be proudly displayed in a place of prominence? (Entry, Living/Family room, above the fire place, etc.)
