Introduction

Hi! Thanks for being here! I am a photographer with a background in filmmaking. Before picking up the camera I spent many years working as a designer and art director for commercials and narrative films. This background sends me always after the narrative story behind every still image. Do you need a professional headshot? The story there is to convey to a potential employer that you will be a great fit for the job! Do you want editorial style images of you and your family? Shall we place you in front of your home? Will we go to your favorite spot in nature just as the sun is glinting through the trees? Perhaps the story here is one of love and welcome, welcoming the viewer for a moment into the feeling of family. Whether we are on location, working in your own space, or in a studio setting, we will always be chasing the story in your images. I love the process of collaborating with you before and during the shoot. Everyone sees differently! This is never more apparent then when we are creating representations of the world through image making. I love this work and I hope to get to share that joy with you!

Q&A

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

unfold fold
I typically charge between $100 to $300 a shoot. This price includes: Discussion prior to shoot, my costs of getting to the shoot, setup, shoot and editing the photos after. These prices are low. This is my first year as a professional photographer and i am still building credibility! If you like the low price book me before I raise the prices next year!

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

unfold fold
We discuss your project *********. Once we decide that I have the job we can have a conversation on the phone to clarify anything further. If the project requires extensive prep for me i.e. for me to do special shopping, location scouting or to create a visual board that will be added to price but it will all be discussed before.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

unfold fold
I went to school for film directing and cinematography (learned about everything to do with putting an image together, lighting to coordinating humans!) After school I worked in Los Angeles for five years as an art director and production designer (props, sets, colors pallets, how to arrange elements in the frame for best texture and composition) Since transitioning to photographer i have worked with aspiring models, vintage curators, families etc!

How did you get started doing this type of work?

unfold fold
I have a small vintage clothing shop in portland. The vintage sellers of portland are an amazing community and everyone needs photos of their inventory! I started taking pictures for my friend's vintage clothing shops, producing high fashion style shoots, casting models and capturing the vintage like the haute couture that it is!

What types of customers have you worked with?

unfold fold
Professionals - 'at work' 'in the studio' portraits for professionals (an architect on construction site, a tattoo artist in the studio, vintage seller in his shop) to use on their websites. Musicians/Bands- images for their album releases to be featured on blogs, as album art, etc. Small business owners- Images of inventory for online selling. Families with young children- narrative/cinematic style portraits of their family. Aspiring Models- images to showcase their skills. Couples - Anniversary images.

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

unfold fold
Recently I took portraits of a local singer-songwriter in preparation for her album release. She needed many portraits of her in natural setting as well as images of her singing on stage. She also needed images for the cover art of two singles and the album. We worked together over a few months discussing the images and then creating them. All in all we did about three photo shoots and various meetings. I charged her a flat fee for the whole project which she paid in increments. She paid me after each batch of photos was delivered and she knew how much she would spend in total.

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

unfold fold
Look around the internet for examples of the type of photo you are looking for. Headshots, portraits, product shots etc. If you have a basic idea of what you would like then we can start out on the same page as we discuss!

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

unfold fold
What are we taking pictures of and what are the pictures being used for? Examples: 'we are taking pictures of me at work. The pictures are for my website.' 'we are taking pictures of my family all together. The pictures are to be framed and put on our wall!' 'i want pictures of me with my long hair before I cut it all off, do you have any ideas for how we can capture my hair?' etc. etc. Cant wait to hear from you!
