Introduction

I am a San Francisco based photographer with a passion for capturing candid laughter and authentic smiles. I'll make as many jokes as it takes to make you feel comfortable so I can capture natural beauty and joy. instagram.com/kathleen.s.photography One thing I love about freelance photography is that I get to meet lots of new people from all different backgrounds. Getting to be creative and social at the same time is my jam.

Q&A

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

unfold fold
I like to talk over the phone with a new customer to get a better idea of their expectations of the shoot and to talk a bit about how I work - I like to take my time and capture authentic moments, rather than heavily posed shots. Then we schedule a date, time, and location for the shoot

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

unfold fold
I earned a Bachelors of Arts from UC Berkeley's College of Environmental Design. I took several fine arts and design courses, but managed to avoid taking a single photography course, while spending most of my free time photographing my peers. My background in art and architecture certainly informs my photography, but I am primarily self-taught.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

unfold fold
After graduating college, while applying to design positions, I told my cousin I really just wanted to take photos. He introduced me to a professional wedding photographer who mentored me as an intern until I started my own business.

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

An augmented reality gaming company hired me to do lifestyle photoshoots of 4-5 models playing their iPad games. They wanted photos at different times of day with San Francisco landmarks in the background. I organized a daytime shoot at Fort Point, the Golden Gate Bridge, and the Legion of Honor, and a night shoot at the Palace of Fine Arts. Each took approximately 3 hours. After delivering the photos from the first two shoots, the company had feedback on how the models were behaving. They hadn't actually sent me the game to play and had some additional requests for ways the models could interact. I did a final shoot at the Embarcadero with the Bay Bridge and Downtown as backdrops while the models actually played the game - we had lots of fun!

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

unfold fold
I encourage customers to look at the portfolios of different photographers and choose a photographer based on their style. A professional photographer should have a consistent style, from the moments they are capturing to how they process the images. I want you to hire me because you love my work - not because my price is the best, or I'm the only photographer you know.
