Introduction

We are a local business, family owned and operated, offering high quality results for over 25 years that provide a personal touch when caring for the pieces our clients bring to us. Kris and I both grew up learning from parents and grandparents how to care for projects on all manner of furniture pieces, and both grew to love watching pieces come to new life with our efforts. It was a joy when we decided to open Zeh's Custom Woodworks, LLC, knowing that we would be able to help our clients bring their pieces a new life. We are passing this along to our children and are excited to see another generation learn the skills and techniques to create furniture as well as repair or refinish it. We have worked on pieces from the late 18th century right up to modern pieces, and have designed and created furniture pieces of all designs and styles, free-standing and built-in. We offer a variety of techniques to create or recreate any finishes. We work with wood, and have done epoxy resin pours, hand-painting, burning, inlay, intarsia, carving, wood turning, upholstery and have a spectacular metal fabricator with whom we partner for all manner of projects. From office spaces to retail cash wraps to wholesale display counters to creating a custom base for a 150-year old cabinet, we can do just about anything you might need. We offer high-quality work, artistry and craftsmanship, and will always treat your projects with the utmost care.

Q&A

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

unfold fold
My standard pricing system for restoration and repair is labor plus materials. I provide an estimate of the labor and materials needed to complete the project. If the material cost is less and/or the labor is less, then I charge you less.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

unfold fold
My typical process for furniture restoration or repair to receive several pictures of the pieces and the area of repair. An estimate is present to the customer based upon the number of hours to complete the restoration or repair and the necessary materials for the project. My typical process for new furniture design and creation is to communicate with the customer on their wants and needs, style, and functionality of the piece. A drawing the piece is presented to the customer, and if the drawing matches expectations, then an estimate of the total project is presented to the customer.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

unfold fold
My grandfather and father were woodworkers and built and restored many pieces of furniture for as long as I have been alive. I worked with my grandfather and father growing up while going to college. I have a Masters of Science in Electrical Engineering and a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering. I have a passion for creating new and restoring older pieces of furniture.

The majority of my customers are residential customers.

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

unfold fold
One of the most recent restoration project that we did was an oak dinning room table that the top was damage with water and heat. The estimate was for four hours and the project was completed with three hours. The customer was only charged for the three hours, and the customer was very happy.

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

unfold fold
I encourage customers to do research and determine exactly what they want for their new furniture piece. For a restoration project, I also encourage customers to do research and read the reviews.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

For a new piece of furniture, I recommend asking the following questions: A. What style do you prefer? B. What type of wood do you prefer? C. What type of finish do you prefer? D. What are the dimension of the piece? E. What is the time-frame for the creation of this piece? F. Where is this piece going to live? Do you want it restored to new or maintain the patina? D. Can the piece be restored/repaired in the home or taken to the woodworker's shop?
