Fox and Bear Woodcraft is a custom woodworking and furniture repair shop located in Cedar Rapids, IA. We also specialize in finish carpentry and cabinet installation. For the past 13 years the art of woodworking has allowed me to create, express, learn, and appreciate the craftsmanship of years past. What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

Pricing is job specific. Repair work is usually priced hourly while custom pieces are estimate based.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

I typically start everything off with a meet and greet. Here we can discuss everything pertaining to the project while giving the customer a chance to get to know me and how I operate my business.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I am completely self taught through literature, television, and internet research.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

I got started in woodworking around 2010. I originally wanted to start making guitars as I am also a musician. Through guitar making I found and fell in love with furniture. I still make an occasional guitar, but furniture is where my passion rests.

What types of customers have you worked with?

I work with everyone.

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

I am quite fond of the Statesman stick chair. Chairs are quite challenging. I love the look. It’s comfortable. This project took me a couple of weeks to complete.

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

A service provider in this field needs to have broad knowledge of wood, types of furniture, joinery, and finishes. That’s just scratching the surface.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

Customers should weigh the pros and cons of the situation. Should I repair this piece? Should I buy new? How important is this to me? How much am I willing to spend saving this piece?
