Introduction

I take the time upfront with the customer to understand what the customer wants to achieve with the project. I focus on quality workmanship and will not cut corners to produce something that doesn't meet my standards of quality. At the end of the project, I want a happy customer that wants to show the completed project to friends and recommends my company for future work. Q&A

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

unfold fold
Many variable go into the pricing such as what type of wood is used, is the project to be painted or stained, how many drawers, how many doors, & of course how big is the project and how much lumber is required?

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

unfold fold
The typical process for working with a new customer initially involves an e-mail or introductory phone conversation with the customer describing the project and the customer's budget. The next step would be to trade sketches, photographs and ideas that the customer or I may have. A visit to the home to take measurements and discuss the project in detail would be the next step. Finally, a final agreement would be reached on the exact project details, pricing, schedule, etc. At that point, I collect money to cover the material costs, then proceed with the procurement of materials.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

unfold fold
I have no formal training as a cabinet maker/furniture maker. However, I have been making cabinets and furniture for approx. 45 years dating back to my high school days when I took every Industrial Arts class that the High School offered. I have also spent time working with a cabinet maker on side jobs. Although not related to cabinet making, I do have a Degree in Civil Engineering and am a Registered Professional Engineer.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

unfold fold
I got started in wood working back in High School when I took an Industrial Arts class. I found that I enjoy working with my hands, making saw dust and find great satisfaction in creating a finished product from a pile of lumber.

What types of customers have you worked with?

unfold fold
Homeowners and some Commercial customers.

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

unfold fold
Recent projects include: Closet organizer with a base cabinet that had 6 drawers and an upper cabinet with adjustable shelves. Day bed with drawers beneath the mattress frame. Small Kitchen table with a drop down leaf and storage cabinet under the table. Table top made from old oak barn wood.

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

unfold fold

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?
