Q&A

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

unfold fold
What type of fuel does the unit burn? The make and model number, of your heating unit.. usually on the back of many stoves, or on the front behind the spark screen on pre-fab/ metal fireplaces.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

unfold fold
I like to perform a level 2 inspection for each new client. That way you will have video of the entire flue/stovepipe from top to bottom. From the very first time I sweep it, we will know if there are ANY issues. NFPA actually requires a level two anytime there is a new owner or tenant.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

unfold fold
I have 9 years experience as a Chimney Technician, NFI certified, member of the National Chimney Sweep Guild, I am a Certified Chimney Professional, and I am a tech guy as well. I make use of a 360° cam to inspect the inside of your flue and dryer vents for anything that may jeopardize the safety of your home. If there is a problem, I can actually show you and offer a solution if there is one.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

unfold fold
I rode along with a friend that was a chimney sweep. I've always been the guy that has lived by "if there's a will, there's a way" and we solved several of his clients problems that day. I started studying for the Certified Chimney Professional licensing test. I am a nerd at heart, so I fell in love with the wealth of knowledge required to be a professional chimney sweep. I aced the test and started with a franchised chimney sweep company for several years before opening Chimney Karma.

What types of customers have you worked with?

unfold fold
I have cleaned, installed, removed, maintained, and refurbished gas, pellet, and wood burning fireplaces and stoves. I was in the top three highest rated sweeps in a nation wide franchise 4 years before opening my own business. I work residential and commercial jobs. I have even designed a permanent stove and stove pipe setup for a yome tent at Homegrown Hideaways AIRBNB in Berea, KY.

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

unfold fold
A new client said that he couldn't get a fire to stop sending smoke back into the house. He had another chimney sweep come out before me and they quoted him a little over 5 grand to reline. I ran my camera through the flue, measured the fireplace and flue for correct dimension, couldn't find anything wrong... I look out the window and notice stickers on his windows and ask when he had the windows installed and he said they had just finished about two weeks prior. So I walk over, crack the window and it draws right up! The house was nearly airtight... We installed an outside air intake so that his fireplace actually drew the air directly from outside and it didn't have to cross the room from the window. Not only did it increase the draw , it also doubled the amount of heat produced by the fireplace because it did not need to use the warm air in the house to feed the fire. Saved the client thousands!

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

unfold fold
Make sure that your chimney sweep can give you before and after pictures or video of the areas that you can't see. I can't count how many times I will be the second chimney sweep called because a fireplace is still performing poorly after being "swept". I've seen chimneys cleaned about 4 foot up from the bottom and then done the same from the top. Leaving everything in the middle of the flue so it was still clogged.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

unfold fold
It would be good to know the last time your chimney was swept. The National Fire Prevention Agency states that any home with a fireplace shall have their chimney inspected annually. Some insurance companies will not pay on a claim caused from a fireplace if it hasn't been regularly serviced by a professional.
