Introduction

I take the time to show clients what I am doing, how I arrived at the figures I came up with and get buy-in. Yes, I am a tax expert but I also want the client to be comfortable with the approach I have taken with their finances. The most important thing I like about preparing taxes is the interaction with people I have known for many years. I catch up with what is going on with their families. I have several clients whose children I watched grow up to adulthood and I help them with college ideas and tax returns.

Q&A

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

unfold fold
In general, I make an appointment and ask the client to visit the resources page on my website. I have an intake form I want them to fill, scan and send to me with a copy of their most recent tax return. I then have an interview with the client to determine their tax issues and budget.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

unfold fold
I am presently working on my continuing education to satisfy the IRS. I was granted the Enrolled Agent designation so I have to provide a higher level of service than most tax preparers. Enrolled agents are permitted to practice throughout the United States, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam and the other U.S. territories. Accordingly, I have to take any additional classes so that I may prepare multi-state returns. **UPDATE** You can check me out on CTEC and find that I am no longer registered. That's OK, I do not have to since I am an Enrolled Agent.**

How did you get started doing this type of work?

unfold fold
I basically followed the family business. I decided to do this to spend more time with my father. I subsequently enjoyed working with the clients and learning more about accounting and business.

What types of customers have you worked with?

unfold fold
The most common types of jobs are individual tax returns with a variety of schedules, most commonly, self-employment, rentals and depreciation.

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

unfold fold
I would say, that looks are not everything....My office is cramped but I love it here. I get to spend time with my father and give him a hand. My father is 80 years old and when I was about 10, he started having me help him. It was very enjoyable and it still is. We respect each other on a professional level now and I just enjoy our time together.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

unfold fold
I would like to tell them about the hours upon hours I have invested studying accounting, the many audits I conducted with the NASD and later the SEC, the many types of folks I uncovered were doing wrong and how I was able to prepare reports and testify as to my findings in hearings.
