Introduction

I am the author of The Professional Tax Preparer, a four-volume income tax training course that I update every year. But the best thing about Bottom Line Bookeeping & Tax is our focus on outstanding customer service. I like my relationship with my clients, most of whom are really great people that I would enjoy as friends even if we didn't have a working relationship. What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

I charge by the form, like most tax professionals. I do not charge by the hour, nor do I charge a percentage of your refund, which is highly dishonest.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I attend several tax seminars and conferences every year; the tax code changes so much it is not possible to stand pat and expect to keep up. This not only keeps me current as each new tax season arrives, but is absolutely necessary in order to update The Professional Tax Preparer, the tax curriculum I wrote in 2008.

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

I had a client who owned rental property in Pennsylvania but lived in Sandy. They had never claimed depreciation for the house they rented, and when I tried to get it for them they couldn't tell me what the lot was worth (land cannot be depreciated) so we could separate that cost from the value of the structure. They told me not to worry about it but I knew it would be a big tax benefit to them, so I spent the better part of the day making calls to PA until I could find the answer. I didn't need to do that, and I didn't charge for my time. But I couldn't leave a good deduction on the table when I knew how much it would help them. I'm just too much of a perfectionist to be satisfied with less than the best I can do.
