Q&A

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

unfold fold
It depends on the job at hand for data recovery I have a range from $300 to $800 for easy to complex issues as long as I don't to physically open a drive. If platters or heads need to be replaced then it can run from $1800 to $2000. For computer repairs and other types of jobs, I charge by the hour $150 minimum of 1 hours.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

unfold fold
When a customer reaches out with an issue, I typically start with a phone call to understand the problem and provide an initial estimate. Following this, we'll schedule a meeting at their preferred location - either at their place or a public spot that suits them. This allows me to assess the situation firsthand and discuss the details of the project

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

unfold fold
With over a decade of hands-on experience, I've developed a strong expertise in data recovery, successfully extracting data from a wide range of storage devices and systems. As a self-taught professional, I've honed my skills through trial and error, often finding creative solutions to complex problems. I enjoy tinkering with technology, figuring out how things work, and adapting them to meet my needs – whether that means repurposing hardware or finding novel ways to recover data.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

unfold fold
I've always been fascinated by the inner workings of technology, which led me to start my career as a computer repair technician. In this role, I would regularly disassemble and repair computers, often working on 20 to 30 units per week. This hands-on experience helped me develop a deep understanding of hardware components and troubleshooting techniques, from replacing motherboards to fixing LCD screens. As I honed my skills, I expanded my expertise to data recovery and even security systems, where I apply my analytical mindset to extract data and identify vulnerabilities.

What types of customers have you worked with?

unfold fold
I've had the opportunity to work with a wide variety of clients, from students and educational institutions to car shops and other businesses. Each project brings its own set of challenges, and I enjoy adapting my skills to meet their specific needs.

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

unfold fold
Recovering data from 5.25-inch floppies was a significant challenge, given their age and the outdated OS/2 Warp operating system. However, by utilizing an emulator, I was able to successfully read the disks and extract valuable data. The payoff was worth it – the customer was thrilled to recover old letters and poetry written by her late father. Seeing the customer's joy and knowing I played a part in preserving cherished family memories made the effort truly rewarding.

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

unfold fold
When facing data loss, it's tempting to try online fixes, but this can often do more harm than good. If you have critical or irreplaceable data, please refrain from attempting DIY recovery methods. Instead, consult a professional Data Recovery engineer who can assess the situation and apply the most effective recovery techniques. This approach minimizes the risk of further damage and increases the likelihood of successful data recovery.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

unfold fold
1. What is the nature of the data loss (e.g., accidental deletion, hardware failure, software corruption)? 2. What type of device or storage media is affected (e.g., hard drive, SSD, USB drive, floppy disk)? 3. How critical is the data (e.g., personal, business, irreplaceable)? 4. Have any attempts been made to recover the data already? 5. What is the estimated value or importance of the data? 6. Are there any specific requirements or constraints for the recovery process (e.g., confidentiality, urgency)?
