Q&A

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

unfold fold
We work on an hourly basis for time spent handling a client's case, and in some cases we do work on a flat fee basis. We need to discuss the needs of the client to find out what works best. With hourly cases, we require an up front deposit (not earned until we do the work). The deposit is refundable.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

unfold fold
The new client speaks to one of our client specialists, then schedules a consultation (by phone, Zoom video conference, or in person). In person meetings can be at one of our office locations (Chicago Loop, Naperville, Oak Brook, Park Ridge, and Frankfort, IL) or we can also choose other locations in Chicagoland if needed.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

unfold fold
Our firm is comprised of excellent attorneys, all dedicated to divorce and family law. I've been a lawyer for 30 years, and have concentrated in divorce for over 20. I've won awards for client service from Avvo.com, and have been named a SuperLawyer and Leading Lawyer in family law for several years. I am also a Fellow in the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, the premier organization of divorce attorneys in the United States. The AAML requires extensive vetting and testing before admission. Further, I am a Fellow in the Collaborative Law Institute of Illinois, and handle collaborative law cases. I am a trained mediator and handle mediation work. I've had extensive experience both with divorce cases taken through trial and those resolved by negotiation. I frequently lecture other divorce attorneys on legal topics related to this area of law practice.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

unfold fold
In 2001, a personal injury client of mine wanted me to handle her divorce. At the time I had never done divorce work. She said, "I like you, you're a nice guy, and I am sure you can figure it out?" She said, "You understand the court system and did a good job for me on my other case, why can't you do this?" I decided to try it, told her I would not charge for my learning time (I had to read books and guides on the topic) and that was it. The case was resolved successfully. She referred friends, they referred friends, and it took over my practice eventually.

What types of customers have you worked with?

unfold fold
Businesspeople, medical professionals, business owners, CEOs, CFOs, C-suite corporate executives, and other smart, successful people.

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

unfold fold
Due to confidentiality rules we don't discuss this kind of thing online. I am very proud of the vast majority of our cases - we generally resolve cases with less hassle and happier clients than our competition. We solve problems, and avoid creating them.

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

unfold fold
Look for the best. Don't leave this process to chance. Too much is at stake. Do your homework on the attorney you are hiring. Google not just the person but the law firm as well. Don't go based on price alone - there is a reason they are charging a lower price. Don't be fooled by a low deposit (retainer) - again this is a gimmick to get clients to hire law firms. You will just be paying more money sooner. Consider that small size can be a disadvantage when it comes to service. What is the team that will work for you? Will they call you back when you need them? Text you?

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

unfold fold
1. Do I really need a divorce? Did I talk with a counselor (maybe alone or with my spouse) about this first? 2. Is the lawyer licensed in my state or where my spouse lives? We are licensed in IL. 3. What are my goals for this case? 4. Do I have my financial information in order (assets, liabilities, income, expenses). 5. What kind of service can I expect from the lawyer? Response time? Access to my file documents? Can I text the lawyer or staff? Are they accessible? 6. What is my budget for legal services? Where can I get the funds to pay for the work?
