Q&A

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

unfold fold
ATTENTION: Before we even get started, it's important to understand that the estimated $125 per session listed here is for COMPARISON PURPOSES ONLY. The price listed would reflect only the first hour of a session without travel fees to your location. The clock would be running from the moment you open the door. Been there, done that...it's dreadful! Luckily for you, we only offer complete programs with fixed pricing so you'll know from the beginning how much it will cost and you won't feel like we're trying to take advantage of you. Why programs? Because we want you and your pup to be successful and the truth is: successful training requires consistency and commitment. It's been our experience, that doesn't really happen on a "per session" basis. We want you and your pup to succeed and be a source of joy. To insure your success we offer a variety of results based programs to cover essential obedience and any behavioral issues you may be experiencing. Our most popular results-based programs are usually completed in about 6-9 sessions depending on the program you prefer to reach your goals. We also have "starter" programs. Though not as comprehensive as our most popular programs, they do give you the information you needed yesterday to get started, like potty training and setting up for a new pup, as well as a few commands. They're a great introduction to training and you can possibly get started the same day. Since our programs are private, all the focus is on you and can be tailored specifically towards your goals and address any problems that arise. We like to train where life happens and prefer for your training sessions to be in your home so we can work where you and your dog are most comfortable and the distractions will be minimal. That means no stress for you about driving anywhere or finding parking. With our Life Skills programs we will also train on location, like a park or dog friendly store, to work on things that happen in the real world, too. Because of the personal nature of our programs, and insure you are successful, we can only work with a limited number of families at a time. We may have a temporary waitlist when we reach that limit. What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

unfold fold
I attended the Marin Humane Society's first Academy for Dog Trainers. Over the years I've attended in-person seminars and completed online courses to learn/expands my skills...but it's the hands-on real life experience working with hundreds of dog over more than 28 years that makes up the bulk of it.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

unfold fold
IT ALL STARTED WITH A DOG. Like many trainers, I started out by training my own dog, Sergio. Actually I didn't really have much of a choice. Sergio was a mess! But with voracious reading and a few group classes to get the knack of it, we worked together to make Sergio balanced, confident, and well trained. People at the local dog park noticed the rapid change in Sergio's demeanor and started asking for tips with their own dogs. I quickly realized I had been blessed with a knack for training and loved helping others. That was 1997, and so it began...

What types of customers have you worked with?

unfold fold
We've encountered just about every kind of dog and human out there, so nothing phases us...well very little, at least! The favorite client is someone that is committed to helping their dog truly become a part of their family. They're willing to put in the effort to get the results and the relationship they dream of. They understand the training takes time and are eager to put in that time, because the results are directly related to the effort. And they are willing to try new ways when the old ways aren't working.

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

unfold fold
I love working with families that are dedicate to helping their dog live their best life. Yeah, it sounds cliche, but it's true. I'm thinking of one particular dog that barked her little head off almost the whole time during our first visit. That was one of her "issues". We worked on simple but important stuff during that first session and when I showed up for the second session the following week, the difference was AMAZING! Because the family actually practiced the training between our session, when I arrived, there was a some excited barking, and then...nothing. She was quiet and calm. It was such a huge difference in just a week. It's not unusual. My clients see this type of change often, but with the barking it was very obvious. And they can now have people visit and she stays on her bed without bothering anyone during a meal. It's so satisfying to help with this sort of change.

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

unfold fold
Training requires thinking in the moment and what has worked for one dog in the past may not work for yours. Fortunately after 28 years we have more than one tool in our toolbox! Every trainer has their own style. We may suggest something that pushes you. And if we do push your comfort zone, say something. Ask why. It's ok. Regardless of what we suggest, you have to be willing to embrace it enough to actually do it, otherwise the training will become more work than fun...and no one wants that! There is more than one way to train a dog, so keep an open mind and be willing to at least give it a try. Remember we all want what's best for your pup.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

unfold fold
During your FREE DISCOVERY CALL clearly explain what you're dealing with and have your ideal outcome in your mind. You can have great ambitions in this area. Go ahead and dream of the perfect dog...realistically it might not happen right away, but there's nothing wrong with working towards that ideal one step at a time.
