Introduction

As a pet owner of two large, senior dogs, a parrot and tropical fish aquarium, I know how important quality care is and how it can be difficult to find someone to love and care for your pets when you aren't there. Whether it be walks, training or pet sitting, you can rest assured that I will care for your "fur babies" as if they were my own. I specialize in basic training of your pup in manners. If you'd like more assistance on obedience training or non-aggressive behavior modification, I'd be happy to help with that, as well. I prefer to use positive reinforcement training methods only. Training, Walks & Petsits by Paula is fully bonded and insured. I am also certified in Pet CPR and First Aid and have graduated from CATCH Canine Trainers Academy.

Q&A

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

unfold fold
$20 for 20 min visit/walk; $25 for 30 min visit/walk, only available in 5 mile radius of Cary Private Lessons available (with dog and client), PLEASE CONTACT ME DIRECTLY FOR A QUOTE! I will be happy to travel a further distance, for additional travel fee. 24-HOUR CANCELLATION REQUESTED, OR FULL CHARGE FOR TRAINING LESSON/VISIT/WALK APPLIES.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

unfold fold
I meet with you and your dog, in your own home, during a complimentary meet-and-greet (approx. 20-30 min) first, before we start training. This ensures that we are a "good fit" and I can answer any questions you have, in person. Typically, from then on, we will meet once a week for 30 min. You pay per lesson and we re-book weekly. I fit the lesson into your best timeframe (weekday mornings or evenings and Sundays available). Not available on Saturdays. I teach basic obedience lessons first (Sit, Down, Stay, Come, Wait, Watch Me, Touch) and work on manners and loose-leash walking and Heeling. We can also address any NON-AGGRESSIVE behavior issues with behavior modification plans. (Barking, Digging, Puppy "Biting", Housebreaking and Jumping).

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

unfold fold
Pet CPR and First Aid Certified CATCH Canine Trainers Academy Member of Pet Sitters International (PSI) for Professional Pet Sitters

How did you get started doing this type of work?

unfold fold
I started as a dog walker and was completely hooked on teaching well-intentioned, but "loose-cannon" dogs to behave on walks and in-home. I decided to pursue my love of training with CATCH Canine Trainers Academy and am so happy I got my certification.

What types of customers have you worked with?

unfold fold
As for dog-clients, I have worked with Great Danes to Chihuahuas and everything in-between. Shy dogs, hyper dogs, fearful and "chill" dogs have all become great friends of mine.

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

unfold fold
I am very proud of a sweet service dog I had the joy of training whose owner wanted me to teach her how to retrieve a cane for her. The problem was that the owner has mobility issues and the dog is both overweight and older. The dog was also afraid of the sound of the metal cane falling to the floor. Using only positive reinforcement methods, it took approximately 4 months of 30 minute lessons to desensitize the dog to the cane and teach her a behavior chain of picking it up, holding it in her mouth and bringing it to her owner on the cue, "Cane". The owner was so happy when her dog was able to bring her the cane with a single word and place it in her hands!

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

unfold fold
Check that the trainer's methods used are appropriate to what your dog really needs. There is no reason to use force or aversive methods if your dog can learn the behaviors with rewards, like treats, toys and praise.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

unfold fold
Find out if the trainer, dog walker or pet sitter is bonded and insured, especially when coming into your home. Make sure they offer a free consultation before you book with them. Lastly, your dog should be wagging their tail after meeting the professional. That's really the most important thing, for your dog to love their new "best friend".
