Introduction

Academy Dog Training by Haywood has had its roots here in the DC area for over 40 years! The Academy has sought to transform people's understanding that even a simple walk is a potential adventure for their pup and them. We seek to teach, both canine and human how to better communicate and learn using our 3 step balanced approach to training. Whether working with puppies or aggressive dogs, we have stood by our mission to maximize the quality of life for all dogs and their families through education. To date, the Academy has brought over 3000 dogs and their families closer together through training and physical fitness! If that relationship is not healthy then another dog is sent to a shelter or worse. We are here to make sure that doesn’t happen. Schedule a FREE evaluation today! Q&A

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

unfold fold
Our prices are set depending on the training program selected. The Academy offers several different training programs that will suit the needs of your pet and your schedule. Please review our website and this will give you details about each training program. The evaluation is your first step to getting a professional to evaluate your dog and to ask you questions about your goals for training. Thank you and it will be a pleasure meeting you.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

unfold fold
Each puppy / dog is different. Each owner has a set of goals they want accomplished. Before any training starts, we must evaluate the dog and ask the owners very detail questions about their dog and what their goals are for training. This evaluation takes about one hour and is done at our facility. The evaluation is free.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

unfold fold
Every year I take atleast 20 hours of dog behavioral courses, 10 hours of hands on skills in different training techniques and teach continuing education classes to Pet Professional trainers.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

unfold fold
While in High School my father enrolled me and my dog 'Stage' in a in-home obedience course. The owner and instructor of the training school was a military police dog trainer who came out to my house. In my second year at Howard University I applied for a dog training job with the same company that taught me how to train my own dog. I have always loved dogs and have owned a German Shepherd from the age of 5 years old. I worked as a Vet tech for Friendship Animal Hospital 1975; I've work for All American Dog Training 1978; I've work for Olde Towne School for Dogs in 1982; I opened my own Dog Training School 'Friendship Academy for Dogs' in 1985.

What types of customers have you worked with?

unfold fold
I work with puppies and their owners on Proactive training... preventing problems before they start. Basic and advanced training is result driven, we are constantly building off the success of the previous lesson. You and your dog is my best advertisement.

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

unfold fold
My Heart & Soul project is 'The K9 Community Center by Haywood'. I just recently open this center for our dog community. The K9 Community Center holds a utopia of events for owners and their pets. A full doggie supply store with premium dog food for sale. In-door dog park, self-serve dog wash, swimming pool and basic thru advanced dog training classes. Specialty dog training programs are also offered... Agility, Nosework, & many more. We also hold seminars for industry professionals and everyday dog owners. This facility is close to my heart and has been a big community hit.

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

unfold fold
When looking for a dog trainer ask questions about their philosophy in training... work with a trainer that not only has a similiar philosophy in teaching and discipline that you have. Also ask about their experience in the field of training and teaching, because the best dog trainer might not be able to teach you how to train your dog.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

unfold fold
The dog training profession has evolved over the past 30 years. Many older trainers sometimes resist moving forward with newer methods and techniques, where a lot of newer trainers have resisted learning and understanding training of the past. This is where I consider myself as a balanced dog trainer. Programs must be fine-tuned for the individual personality of each pet, and the circumstances surrounding each family.
