Introduction

Do you need help training a puppy, adult dog, or rescued dog? Do you need help with housetraining, obedience, or behavioral issues? In addition to being a professional training instructor for 30+ years, I have extensive experience in veterinary medicine and other dog-related fields. Murphdog Dog Training offers Professional Training for Dogs and Their Families, specializing in obedience, behavior, social skills, and house training/puppy rearing. Additionally, I have a time-tested/puppy-tested successful method for house training that I offer as part of private training. I OFFER PACKAGES to make training more affordable. There is much more to "training" than just obedience. I help turn the "family dog" into a wonderful "member of the family". Behavioral conditioning, social grace, and good manners are extremely important and can only be accomplished with understanding, devotion, and the right technique. A "COMPLETE TRAINING PACKAGE" for OBEDIENCE and BEHAVIORAL TRAINING, may include Sit/Stay, Sit/Stay at Door, Walking at Heel, No Pulling, No Jumping, Greeting Guests, Go-To-Place, Come-When-Called, Leave-It, Drop-It Puppy-Rearing, Separation Anxiety, Impulse Control, Destructive, Guarding Resources, Fear Issues, Barking, Biting, Voice Control, Body Language, Leash Control, Separation Anxiety, Impulse Control, Self-Esteem, Destruction, Guarding Resources, Vehicle Safety, Fear-based Issues, Barking, Biting, Playtime Protocol, Socialization Skills with outings to shopping centers and Lowes/Home Depot, and so much more… PLUS ONGOING SUPPORT. I'm also VERY SUCCESSFUL with housetraining. LOOKING FOR JUST SOME BASIC TRAINING? NEED HELP WITH HOUSE TRAINING? TEACHING YOUR PUPPY TO WALK ON A LEASH? ARE YOU SLEEPING IN THE LIVING ROOM NEXT TO YOUR PUPPY so you can take him out every hour?  I NEVER USE SHOCK COLLARS. I DO NOT DO BOARD AND TRAIN. I truly believe that training is most successful when done in the home with the pet parent. I only do private training in the pet parent's home, neighborhood, and outings to stores and walking trails for socialization. Of course, all sessions are done with the pet parent. Because of my extensive experience, I am considered a Canine Behaviorist and a Canine Specialist, someone with training and experience in more than one dog-related field. Every method used is explained and practiced with the pet parents to ensure success. No two dogs are alike, and teaching methods must be adjusted and appropriate for each dog and its family. ***

Q&A

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

unfold fold
*CHRISTMAS PUPPY SPECIAL-HOUSE TRAINING INCLUDED WITH COMPLETE TRAINING PACKAGE! I offer a package price that includes the cost of the consultation, trying to make it affordable. I also have a time-tested/puppy-tested very successful method for house training. Consultation/evaluation is $95 or included with a training package. A package offers a better price and a greater commitment to training. If I need to work more with the pet parent or take time to answer questions, there is no pressure because of an hourly fee. Sessions are 1-hour minimum.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

unfold fold
A lot depends on what the pet parent is looking for as far as instruction and what issues the puppy or dog may have. I always start by listening carefully to why they decided to call a trainer and then explain how we can proceed, why I do what I do, the method used, why it works, etc. Then I will work with the dog and show the pet parent how to do exactly what I did. They will have a chance then to try working with their dog while I instruct them. When I leave, the pet parent has a full understanding of what needs to be done so they can practice during the week.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

unfold fold
In addition to running her own dog training business, I penned a pet advice column for a New York magazine, was asked to teach dog training at Long Island University, and has extensive experience in veterinary medicine, grooming, nutrition, rescue and commercial work. As a life-long animal lover, I have well established myself within the "dog community" as one who rescues dogs from homelessness, abuse, illness and abandonment. I developed a gold standard approach to training, philosophy and technique enriching the lives of dogs and their families, promoting a lifetime of commitment and love. I am constantly working and each job is different than the one before because each dog and each parent is different. I also write a column/blog and do extensive research. I work hard at finding comparisons between human behavior and canine behavior so that the families that I work with will have a better understanding as to why their dog does what he does and how to correct or modify that undesirable behavior.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

unfold fold
We understand each other; that is, the dog and I. It's comfortable and trusting. It goes both ways. It was a natural fit for me. I was raised with dogs and they were always part of the family. Dogs do not have a hidden agenda. It was easy for me to relate to them and know how to teach them appropriate and acceptable behavior. Dogs instinctively know when to trust a human.

What types of customers have you worked with?

unfold fold
Walking on lead without pulling is a major concern, yet it is the easiest obedience method to teach a dog in relatively little time. Most trainers will suggest the use of equipment that restrains the dog to keep him from pulling but does not teach the dog anything. A well-trained dog will walk next to his pet parent without the use of a restraint. Jumping is another common complaint and easily stopped.

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

unfold fold
A woman in her early 80's was given a Mastiff mix breed dog as a gift but was unable to walk the dog. One week after working with them she called to tell me that she walked with her to the mail box for the first time. Within a few weeks they both enjoyed a walk into town.

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

unfold fold
Meet the trainer first before starting the lessons. Ask as many questions as you can about the methods and equipment used and ask for a demonstration. I always provide a consultation, evaluation and demonstration with complete explanations about everything I do.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

unfold fold
Pet parents should make a list of everything their pet is doing that they think is inappropriate and add all the things they would like to have their dog trained to do. A professional experienced trainer will provide information and answers to every issue a pet parent needs to address about what is considered unwanted behavior from their pet.
