Introduction

Hi! My name is Pennie Mahon, thank you for inquiring about getting your dog trained with Barks 5th Avenue- Barkology Dog Training. With over three decades experience serving the public and perfecting my trade in the dog training industry I can offer a wide variety solutions to most common behavioral issues. In addition I’ve also enjoyed much success with my personal dogs showing and competing in multiple sports such as Disc and Dock Diving winning State National and World championship titles. Through all this experience I have discovered that an individual approach to each dog, combined with owner education, is the key to success. By using reward-based training techniques, balanced with fair discipline and leadership a clear line of communication is created cultivating a cooperative and trusting relationship with your pet that allows me to succeed where others cannot. I’ll be happy to answer any further questions you may have and explain my training techniques and philosophy with a personal phone call, or if you like I can answer any questions here, just ask! Thank you, Pennie Mahon *2012 Skyhoundz Open World Champion - “Psych” *2023 Dock Dogs Big Air Reserve World Champion “MD Golden Eagle” 🐾 References provided upon request. 🐾 Payment plans available

Q&A

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

unfold fold
Training package is all inclusive, 3 weeks training & boarding , the initial in home consult and then two training classes at your home with your dog once the three weeks is completed.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

unfold fold
The initial phone consult to determine needs and explore solutions, then we schedule a in home consultation so I can observe the dynamics of your relationship with your dog and evaluate the negative behaviors you wish to change, then enrollment into the 21 day board and train program, when completed I deliver the dog back home to you along with a two hour transitional training session for you and your family so that you can learn what your dog has accomplished and how to get your dog to respond to you like it does the trainer. You will then have one more follow up in home training session to be used when you would like at your discretion.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

unfold fold
L. I. F. E. …. strong work ethic, integrity and a lifetime of learning and experience in my field of expertise.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

unfold fold
My love of animals and training has drawn me into this life long career. From training my dogs as a child to do tricks and winning my first 4H dog show at the age of 10 to a love of horses that took me to the show ring and then champion rodeo competitor for over a decade to founding owning and running a successful boarding, grooming, daycare, training facility and retail pet store for 23 years. And closest to my heart was discovering the sport of Disc Dogs in the year 2000 where I’ve been competing judging and conducting seminars all over the world for over two decades accumulating many accomplishments including State, National, and World Championship titles.

What types of customers have you worked with?

Our 3 week "board and train" package is the favorite amongst families. During this period, your dog stays with us at our facility, and has daily training sessions. We have found this to be the most successful method of training, as it allows your pup to focus on the curriculum without any distractions and allows us to maintain consistent reinforcement during the learning process.

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

unfold fold
We also train dogs for a local charity organization, the DAWG Foundation, who provide service dogs for military veterans battling PTSD. This is an intensive, year-long training process, and we recently began training 2 twin sister black labs. One will be going to a local Navy Corpsman veteran who battles PTSD. The veteran comes in daily to work alongside the trainers, and the team is quickly growing into a family. It is an amazing thing to watch!

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

unfold fold
Be discerning, beware of paid initial consultations, and ask questions. This is your dog; he/she loves you as much (if not more) than you love him/her. Do not place their well-being in the hands of someone you do not trust, Make sure that your Trainer is experienced accredited and can provide referrals and has good reviews.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

unfold fold
At Barks 5th Avenue, we train using POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT. We do not insult, attack, severely punish, or hit dogs. We believe that by praising and rewarding dogs, they (like people) are more likely to perform as we request. Over the decades, we have found that this is the most successful method. Scoldings for inappropriate behavior are light and appropriate, with a focus on REDIRECTING the dog's attention and energy towards the positive task, instead of focusing on the negative.
