What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
Customers receive an invitation to use our mobile app where they can fill out profile details about their home and their pets. I will then do a meet and greet with them and their pets.
Our mobile app is used for messaging, payments, walker tracking and scheduling. It's easy to use and does a great job of helping us keep track.
Before any of our employees are sent to the home solo, I will accompany them for each visit until I am satisfied they understand the needs of that particular household and are up to the task. We also offer meet and greets with our walkers and clients upon request. We try to train as few walkers as possible on one household and establish regular schedules so that pets see a familiar face each time they are walked. Most households have 2-3 regular walkers.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
This is my third successful small business, and by far the largest and most enjoyable. Over the years my empathy for my clients has been my strong point, and I have a knack for employing systems and failsafes to ensure each job is done the right way every time.
My wife, Sarah, who runs the back end of the company, worked professionally as a logistics manager for a company with hundreds of users. She not only managed countless scheduling tasks, but also acted as international travel liason for the company's executives. She can find you a reliable sherpa in Nepal, the best noodle house in Laos, a cab in Bucharest- she can also manage tight schedules for 5 different walkers driving and walking all over the Vallejo, Benicia and American Canyon areas.
How did you get started doing this type of work?
I was studying web design from my home. I was so busy that I didn't have time to walk my own dog, so I began using crowd-sourced dog walking apps.
The experience was ok, but I wasn't happy with my dog simply being walked around the block by a different person every time. Also, some of the walkers were half-hearted and didn't seem interested in playing with my dog. I wanted her to be hiking and adventuring and making friends. I wanted her to be excited when her walker rang the doorbell. So, I started a business that could do just that. It has become my passion and the most important work of my life.
What types of customers have you worked with?
Papillons, chihuahuas, shephards, pitbulls, huskys, mastiffs- you name it!
Every dog is different and every owner is different. We pay attention and we work hard to make sure your dog is cared for as you yourself would care for them!
We also value our relationships with our human clients. We have dozens of satisfied customers, because our extensive customer service experience allows us to tailor our interactions to whatever style you prefer! ould you describe yourself as easygoing? Type A? Dog-obsessed? We can work with you!
Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?
Integrating our website with a mobile app to manage our requests, payments, and schedules is definitely my proudest accomplishment. We have refined our scheduling and training system over the course of two years and we're always making improvements. It's so smooth at this point that it's just a joy to watch our clients and walkers interact.
What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?
You really do get what you pay for. A walker charging very little may just be trying to build their reputation, but you'll often find that they are quickly overextended and unprepared to scale. A cheap walker may not be trained in animal handling, they may not be familiar with different breeds and their personalities, or they may not be truly invested in your dog's experience.
Make sure they are available when you need them, and preferably have a backup in case of emergency. We have never had to turn down a walk request because we are organized and have an amazing team of walkers who are available year round.
We have excellent insurance coverage and we are also bonded. Make sure anyone you hire is a true professional by asking for their license, bond, and insurance information.
What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?
What is your walking style, and will the dog walker you hire do their best to be consistent with your style when they walk your dog?
What kind of experience do you want your dog to have? Do you want them to meander around your neighborhood on their regular route, taking in all the smells and marking to their heart's delight? Do you want them to explore new parks and go on hiking adventures? Do you want them to run for an hour and get tuckered out? Dogs have different needs, and we want to know what your pet's are!
Is your walker alert and paying attention to your dog and their surroundings? What would the walker do when encountering a stray dog, or even a coyote? Do they know how to avoid a confrontation? We know to keep eyes up at all times, we don't allow our dogs to interact with strange dogs or humans unless the owner specifically requests socialization, and we have extensive experience dealing with the stray and loose dogs that roam Vallejo and Benicia's streets.
What do your walker do if your dog gets injured, and what would they do if your dog slips their leash? While it's never fun, we have dealt with dog bites, collar slips, and thorny paws, and in each situation our walkers are calm, effective, and communicative. We have measures in place for emergency vet services, alerting our clients to any injuries that occur, and we know how to take care of a dog that is scared and frightened. We understand that things happen and as professionals we are equipped to handle any situation.
