Q&A

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

unfold fold
Unlike most services, we offer spay/neuter and rescue discounts off their first reservation with us. These are causes that we feel strongly about. For the owner, it's like getting part of your adoption or spay/neuter costs back for doing a good thing.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

unfold fold
We would have the sitter meet with the owner and their pet (s). Then the owner will contact for the follow up after the meeting. If it's a go, then the owner will introduce herself and present a welcome folder of information to the client which contains, rates, policies, procedures, proof of insurance, references, etc.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

unfold fold
I have been a pet sitter since 1996. I have had dogs since I was 6 years old. They have always been my passion. I completed a vet assistant course in 1983 but found that I was too sensitive and emotional, so I looked for the happier side, which is pet care. I make it a point to educate myself, as my clients rely on me for advice.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

unfold fold
I researched pet sitting on line. I began taking care of my neighbors animals and developed relationships with my vet and other pet stores and groomers in the area. I attended rescue adoption events. I worked night jobs to keep my days free. I sacrificed a lot to get where I am. This is all we do. We are dedicated.

What types of customers have you worked with?

unfold fold
All of my clients put the needs of their pets first. They are exceptional kind loving people. We are blessed to know each and every one of them.

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

unfold fold
I am always involved in fostering pets when I can. I am currently working on writing a book, since I have been in the business longer than most and have been constantly encouraged to do so.

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

unfold fold
To watch for the sitter to actually bond with the your pets. Watch how your pets react to that sitter, pets are very keen and smart. Make sure that they are in it for the love of animals, not the money. Make sure they are truly a business, that they have insurance and will show it to you. References should be provided and many of them so that they are real. Look for someone that has been in it a very long time, at least 5 years. Steer clear of the younger ones, who tend to have other goals down the road. You want to build a long lasting relationship with the sitter, yourself and the pets.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

unfold fold
Any other future goals besides pet sitting? Is this a temporary thing? Are they in college? Have another job? Business license and insurance? How long have they been pet sitting? Do they know CPR, First Aid? Give insulin shots? Pills? Afraid or allergic of any pets?
