How did you get started doing this type of work?

unfold fold
I had a beautiful Husky named Kenai who passed while in a boarding facility. He is a huge reason I was able to take the leap of faith that was opening my own pet care business. I understand the heartache of losing a pet, your best friend, while you are away and I want to help others avoid this happening to them as much as I am able. I have always wanted to work with animals. When I was a kid I was the one who was collecting Wildlife Treasury cards, for those who may remember that old box - I believe it's considered "vintage" now (haha, showing my age). I would sit in my room and read my favorite cards over and over again. I always told myself I was going to work with animals one day and I would dream of all the ways I could make that dream come true. I didn't expect it to happen quite the way it did, but I'm happy with it all the same. When I was around 11 I started watching neighbor's pets and homes while they were away. I really became the "go-to" in my neighborhood if you needed your pets cared for. One of my favorite places to go had cats and various exotics that I had the pleasure of learning to care for. Fast-forward a few years and I was volunteering with the Cat Adoption Team and participating in TNR (trap and release) here in Wilmington as well. I carried on with the TNR programs when we were living abroad too. This is how my journey in pet care started and I've been doing this ever since. It never occurred to me that watching someone's pets in-home would ever be a career. At most, it was a side gig for me throughout my life until one day a friend got me to consider it as an actual career. This friend talked me into stepping outside of my comfort zone and helped me manage the fears that come with taking a leap of faith. It's hard to find the courage to stop doing what is comfortable to start doing what you love. Finally, in March 2022, I was ready to file for an LLC and started Pawsatively Golden Pet Care. Offering 20+ years experience serving the Wilmington area, I have started building a team of pet care specialists to assist me in caring for your totally PAWsome pets! I've groomed pets on the side for about 15 years too. I quickly realized that in order to offer the absolute BEST pet care, I would need to hire actual employees as opposed to independent contractors. I am too obsessed with quality control to sub-out work to someone I cannot train to do things to the standard I require. So, I found some individuals who could bring their own experience to the table and have personally trained them to my standard of care.

What types of customers have you worked with?

unfold fold
We specialize in what we call "the reform school kids" which are those pets who have really strong quirks or that need a special hand to guide them. We've done hospice-type care for pets with terminal illness, geriatric pets, special needs pets, or just plain quirky pets. We have puppy care programs, and can customize enrichment programs for high-energy dogs. Everything we do is customizable and we have hand-picked our team to cover a range of situations and care needs.

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

unfold fold
Most of our projects are charity events. We try to have one every quarter. The next one on the books is going to be June 24th from 10am-3pm at PAWS Resale Shop on Carolina Beach Road to support Rosey's Rescue. There will be some really great vendors and we would love to see you there!

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

unfold fold
Even if you decide not to use a professional company, I implore you to do your research on whoever you go with. Boarding in the sitter's home is illegal in most states, including North Carolina so if you board at someone's home they are breaking the law and if anything happened to your beloved pets while under their care in their home, no insurance will cover it, even if you use Rover or some other gig-based tech company that claims to have a guarantee. I know a lot of people do not know this so I like to always let people know. There are too many pet deaths at the hands of hobbiest pet sitters, Rover's own Q&A Community Forum has threads and threads of complaints of loss, injuries, and death of pets due to circumstances that were 100% avoidable. At the very least, make sure they have insurance, emergency training (first aid & CPR), back-ups in case they can't get there for whatever reason, and contingency plans in place if your pet somehow got loose - things happen, a dog walker may trip and lose the leash for a moment and that's all it takes for some dogs to bolt. (We use GPS trackers for at-risk dogs. Haven't needed it yet but I'd still rather have it to fall back on.)

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

unfold fold
1. Realistically, what is the best situation for your pet? There are many pets who thrive in kennels, for example, and others that are truly terrified the entire time they are there and would do much better if allowed to stay in their own homes. 2. Budget. The phrase "you get what you pay for" is absolutely true. Don't base your decision of who to go with on price alone. I understand there are budgets to stick to, pet care truly is not a "one size fits all" scenario. I wouldn't say to go with the highest price either though. Just, do your homework. 3. Shop around. Call and speak to the places you are considering. Ask about contingency plans, disaster plans, back-up plans and experience. 4. Have a plan. Know both the least and the most care you are willing to pay for. Especially around the holidays. We start booking for Christmas in June. Those who wait until the last minute may only have drop-ins available to them, so if you need more than that - start looking early! We tell our clients to be aware of this because those longer stay options are extremely limited and we operate on a first come, first served basis. We also encourage our clients to book with us "tentatively" if they know they will need us but maybe don't have exact dates yet. As long as they stay within the cancellation policy guidelines, they can cancel for free.
