What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
I charge $25 per visit and a typical visit is 30 minutes. At this time, due to the care I need to provide my own elderly pets, I am unable to do any overnight stay overs and I can’t board any pets at my house.
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
I typically like to meet the customer and their pets at least a day before the job so we can go over the details of the visit. I always feel the customer is more at ease when they can see who it is taking care of their fur babies and they can ask me any questions they may have. I also want to make sure the pets have met me to ensure they are comfortable with me.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Of course, I've grown up around dogs and cats all of my life but I have also worked in the vet industry for 10 years. In that time, I have assisted vets and their technicians with treatment and care for dogs and cats. I've taken care of boarding dogs, cats, rabbits, ferrets, iguanas, chinchillas, birds, guinea pigs, hamsters, gerbils and fish. I've also worked at a horseback riding school when I was in high school. At that time, I was caring for horses and goats. I can care for just about any animal, but I'm not comfortable around spiders and snakes....no offense to the spiders and snakes!
How did you get started doing this type of work?
Because I've grown up with animals and developed a love of animals at a very young age, I quickly knew that I wanted to work around them, with them, and for them. I took up horseback riding in high school and started my first job there. I loved it! Later in life, I started working in a vet hospital to help care for animals. During that time, there were several clients with elderly animals or very ill pets that were unable to board at the hospital where I worked. I was asked to care for these beloved babies and I instantly fell in love with the work. I've been pet sitting and dog walking ever since!
What types of customers have you worked with?
I have worked with many different customers. I've taken care of dogs, cats, guinea pigs, gerbils, hamsters, birds, fish, iguanas, chinchillas, ferrets, horses, chickens, calves, and goats and it’s always a pleasure to meet the owners of these great animals. I can see how much their babies are cared for and loved.
Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?
I’ve recently started to work with a couple of dogs for training. I’ve been working with them for the past couple months and I’ve seen some great results. It feels great to know that I can help pet owners and be able to show them how smart their pet is. Plus it’s a lot of fun teaching them tricks and running through obstacles with them! I’m just learning so I have a ways to go to be a pro!
What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?
I always recommend meeting the person you have hired to care for your pets at least the day before to ensure they have clear instructions.
What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?
How long has the person been doing that service?
How much experience does the person have?
What does the person charge?
Does the customer want the person to stay overnight or are visits through out the day good?
