Q&A

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

unfold fold
Rates are based on the size and breed of the dog and the services requested (full or partial grooming). Most jobs are priced between $60 and $75. I offer discounts for multiple dogs at a single location.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

unfold fold
In order to facilitate the grooming appointment, I invite new customers to complete an intake form through my website. It is useful to consider in advance whether you have a sink, tub or shower that may be used for bathing your dog and where you would have me unload and set up my table and equipment. I am happy to answer any questions in advance by phone or email.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

unfold fold
I hold a certificate from the Virginia School of Pet Grooming and am also certified in pet first aid.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

unfold fold
After working as a dog walker for two years, I enrolled in the Virginia School of Pet Grooming.

What types of customers have you worked with?

unfold fold
During my training, I groomed countess dogs of every variety. Since launching Calming Cuts, I have worked with numerous customers in their homes (including many apartments). My customers enjoy the convenience of in-home grooming. Some have dogs that tend to be anxious and have not done well in a salon setting.

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

unfold fold
I spent the late afternoon grooming a beautiful and exceptionally anxious Golden Doodle. His owner told me that he had previously been roomed at a local salon and had been so stressed there that she could not return, although he was overdue for a haircut. I spent extra time massaging him and using aromotherapy before I started his haircut. He never relaxed fully, but his heart rate slowed and we were able to get through the haircut successfully. His owner was pleased with the experience. Update: Since writing the above post last year, I have been grooming this wonderful Golden Doodle on a regular basis. We now have such a good relationship that he literally jumps onto my grooming table as soon as he sees it!

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

unfold fold
Observe your dog and trust your instinct. Most dogs do not enjoy being groomed, but you owe it to your pet to make the process as low-stress as possible.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

unfold fold
If considering a salon or mobile grooming vehicle, is the facility clean and well-ventilated? Will my dog be placed in a crate before or after grooming? Will a cage dryer be used and, if so, what precautions will be taken to avoid overheating? Does the groomer use high-quality products? Will my dog be more comfortable with an in-home groomer? Do I have a sink, tub or shower where the groomer can bathe my dog?
