What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

It can be very difficult to glean the full scope of work and the cost from just a brief description. It is best for both me and the client if I provide them with a proposed project site visit. Please understand that that my time, Thumbtack charges, and fuel costs can be substantial. I do not charge for a site visit so please keep this in mind when selecting a contractor. Neither one of us wants to waste the others time.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

Listen, Listen and Listen some more. What I think may be a great idea may not be what the customer envisions. I like to play detective and look at the client's home to get an idea of the style that best suits them.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

Over 40 years' experience in the construction and woodworking trades.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

I started as a pick up framer in 1982 working for Taylor Construction out of Long Beach Ca. I immediately fell in love with building and thirsted for knowledge in every aspect of the trade. I soon became a peacework framer then a joist and roofing journeyman. After almost 15 years I decided I wanted to build custom furniture and cabinetry. That continued for another ten years. After I did a custom build for a Universal Studios executive, I soon found myself as a prop and set designer, which went on for about 6 years. In 2007 I decided I wanted to go back to my first love and started Mini da Vinci Construction.

What types of customers have you worked with?

I have had the pleasure of designing and building for every type of person from every walk of life.

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

I recently built a prop for a high school dance troupe. When it came time to pay me it was obvious that they had to break open the piggy bank to do so. I decided the right thing to do is just charge them for the materials. A week later I received an invitation to their dance premier. Before the show started the entire troupe came out on stage and dedicated the performance to me. You just can't put a price on that.

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

You need to meet with your contractor. Thinking you can get a competent and trustworthy contractor by exchanging texts and pictures will never end well. Take your time, set up site visits and have questions ready for them. Even the smallest job can turn into a nightmare when you hire someone to do a project that is out of their wheel house. In the end, trust your gut.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

A good idea of what they want and a budget they want to stay within is all I need to get any client what they want to accomplish.
