Q&A

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

unfold fold
Pricing is based on data collected and analyzed over several years to include cost of material, level of effort and overheads. Contractors are not cheap or expensive, each contractors pricing is based on overheads, level of insurance and legal structure. For example an incorporated business with employees will charge more than a sole. However if a sole is charging the same price as a small corporation - yeah that should be frowned upon.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

unfold fold
For a non-trivial projects, I prefer to do a free site visit to properly assess the scope of work, thereafter I email a formal estimate and brief project plan on my letterhead. For trivial projects such as changing fixtures a site visit is not necessary - fixed costs apply.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

unfold fold
I have an associates in business, associates in sustainable construction management, CALCTP certification as well as electrical training at Los Angeles Trade Tech.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

unfold fold
I am passionate about renewable energy and energy conservation therefore I am involved in the electrical field.

What types of customers have you worked with?

unfold fold
I started off working with commercial customers performing LED retrofits by leveraging utility rebate programs. When said programs ended I worked with residential customers. I have worked with customers at all economic levels and backgrounds.

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

unfold fold
Electrical work is always challenging, no matter how well planned there is always something that will make you stop and scratch your head. I love projects that challenge me to problem solve. Although I have strong focus in recessed lighting installation a customer recently hired me to run 10 ethernet lines 2 of the lines was from downstairs to a closet in the upstairs bedroom. The customer and other bidders anticipated exterior walls but I was able to do it inside the wall. It was a 2 day project.

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

unfold fold
Support your local contractors. Hopefully we are all seeing that our economic success is intertwined with everyone's economic success. If a contractor demonstrates knowledge, competence and fair pricing hire her/him. Transparency is always appreciated in terms of budgeting, there is no harm in saying I don't have budget for this just yet. Definitely do not solicit free work from contractors.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

unfold fold
Trivial tasks should be straightforward. For non-trivial projects, it all depends on the scope of work. Solicit as much advice as you can from your contractor. I am always in advice mode when I do a site visit. Get a rough idea about the anticipated project plan so you can prepared yourself.
