Q&A

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

unfold fold
Pricing for Hardwood Flooring can very greatly. Everything is priced by the square foot, but various jobs require different approaches. It is generally split into three different categories; new install and finish, prefinish/engineered install, refinishing, and staircases. Usually the biggest variant in any bid is the cost of materials, especially for new installs.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

unfold fold
Generally every job starts off with an initial bid. Its best to see the job first before anything begins. It is not a only a matter of measuring, but looking for anything that might need extra attention. For example: water damage, board replacement, squeaking floor, etc. All issues that can be addressed, but its best to figure out before hand. It also gives us a chance to work out what the customer wants/needs. That way we are able to work together to achieve their goals.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

unfold fold
Each of our owners/workers has more than fifteen years experience. We all started out at bigger companies before heading off on our own. We completed our apprenticeships over thirteen years ago, and have spent over a decade honing our journeyman craft.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

unfold fold
Each owner started differently. One was fresh out of college and looking to support their family. The other got into the trade with the influence of a family member. Both fell into love with the work, and have been doing it every since.

What types of customers have you worked with?

unfold fold
We have experience working in everything from hundred year old homes to million dollar houses. Every job is different depending on the customers needs. One day could be refinishing a loft downtown, the next could be installing flooring in Loch Loyd. Job's very from week to week, and person to person. But, after fifteen years, we have seen our fair share of almost everything. If it has to do with hardwood floors, we can do it.

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

unfold fold
There was a recent project we did that we like to call a "Game Changer." These are typically older houses that have hardwood flooring throughout the entire house. You will see this a lot in older homes, because they were required to have it in order to get the house up to code. Typically it is also good quality wood, so it looks exceptionally well when freshly stained and coated. Most costumers don't even know it's there until they look. I, personally, went out to bid a floor for a customer that wanted all new hardwoods installed. One peak at the house, and I knew that I needed to look under the carpet first. Sure enough, he had hardwood flooring going throughout the entire first floor of his home, and he never knew it before. Needless to say, he was able to save quite a bit of money not buying all new material. It made my day seeing him happy with the finished project, and also saving him some money along the way.

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

unfold fold
The most important thing in looking for any contractor is experience in the job they are trying to sell. There are a lot of people hired on as salesman that have never done the job before. When someone is inexperienced in what they need to be looking for, there is a lot that gets missed.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

unfold fold
Customers should have a understanding of what they would like to accomplish before getting a bid. However, getting multiple quotes for different scenarios is completely doable. Each bid is itemized out so the customer can see how much everything costs, and can make decisions from there.
