Q&A

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

unfold fold
For carpet stretching, I charge $0.80 per square foot with a wood sub-floor. Patching and repairing carpet can range from $275.00-$350.00 in most cases. Our minimum service charge is $275.00 Most patches fall within my minimum service charge. If there is a project that is more involved, I will come out and give a free written quote if is too difficult to quote over the phone. It is very important to me that the client knows the cost up front before the work is started.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

unfold fold
When I first meet my customer, I will do a walk through to see what type of repair will be needed. Once I see the scope of work, I always provide a written quote before any work is started.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

unfold fold
I started working in the carpet cleaning & repair business in 1989. I learned how to do carpet work on the job, training for 2 years. After that I started my own carpet cleaning company. I attended IICRC Certification classes and became certified in various diciplines, such as carpet cleaning, carpet dyeing, upholstery cleaning, water damage restoration and of course, carpet repairs. Over the years I became a known as an expert in high end fabric restoration. Estate managers & interior designers hired us to provide services to the families they worked for. In 2001 I purchased a retail flooring shop. I provided sales and installation service to the public. I have been in the flooring industry for over 32 years and have a broad and diverse knowledge of carpet, whether it is cleaning, dyeing, installing or carpet repairs & stretching. This experience and knowledge gives me the ability to assist my clients for a favorable outcome.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

unfold fold
I started working for a carpet cleaning company in 1989 that provided carpet cleaning and repair services to multi family housing complexes. We would go into apartments between renters, clean and repair carpets for the new tenants. In 1992 I started my own cleaning company. In 2001 I purchased a retail flooring store. I sold that company in 2007. I started Carpets By Chris shortly after and specialized in carpet repairs and stretching.

What types of customers have you worked with?

unfold fold
Over the years I have worked for all types of customers. I have worked for multi family housing and management companies. I have also worked for many estate managers and prominate Seattle families who have been clients for years. Some of these include the founders of Microsoft, McCaw Cellular, Amazon & Costco.

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

unfold fold
A young couple asked me to come out and seam the carpet in the basement. I went out and found that they had paid a carpet cleaner $800.00 to pull up the carpet, replace the pad to get rid of pet odor. He was also suppose to seam all the seams he had cut and then stretch the carpet back into place. He got the young couple to pay up front. He installed the wrong thickness of pad and left huge gaps between the old pad and new so you could feel it under the carpet. He then told them that the guy he was going to have out to seam and restretch the carpet couldn't make it out and they would have to hire someone to do that even though it was in the scope of work he had charged them for. He left their basement torn up and the job unfinished after taking their $800.00. I went out and repaired all the pad, reseamed the carpet, and restretched it all back. It took me about 3 hours to complete the job. The great thing is that the carpet cleaner agreed to pay my fee for the young couple.

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

unfold fold
If you are looking to have your carpets stretched, make sure to ask the professional if they are going to use a power stretcher rather than a knee kicker. Also ask if they will guarantee the stretch for the life of the carpet. Once it is done correctly with a power stretcher, it should never need to be stretched again.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

unfold fold
Is the carpet in good enough condition to last long enough to warrant the expense of the repair or re-stretching. If the damage to the carpet was caused by a pet, what will stop the pet from damaging the carpet again after the repair is performed?
