Introduction

You will love your garden again! Jane will do a thorough weeding and clean up. Jane worked full time as a gardener in New Hampshire for over 10 years, in Florida for one year, and now in Berkeley, California for over two years. Her specialty is the fine detail work that most people don't have the patience or time for. She loves being outside, taking care of plants, and getting to know your landscape preferences. She takes the time needed to make your garden look happy and special. Her attention to detail is impeccable and she likes to make your garden look the way you want it to. Jane can accommodate most styles of gardens; whether it is a natural setting or formal. She will let you know if she finds anything that needs attention outside of weeding. You can count on her to show up, do what needs to be done and stay in touch. She doesn’t own a weed whacker or leaf blower. Everything will be done carefully and by hand. Jane also has neem oil and organic fertilizers to treat your plants as needed. She does pruning if she can reach it with a step ladder. Jane does not mow lawns or weed lawns or work with any toxic chemicals.

Q&A

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

unfold fold
Jane’s fees are $65/hr, three hour minimum.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

unfold fold
When you first meet Jane she will ask you what you like about your garden as well as what you dislike about it. Together you will create a plan for getting your garden to where you want it to be and discuss what will be required as far as maintaining it that way.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

unfold fold
Jane has ten plus years working for two different landscaping companies. Clients included private accounts as well as business accounts. Jane is currently being trained by several highly experienced gardeners in Berkeley California. The training has included pruning of perennials, bushes and trees, working with native plants and grasses, and caring for drought tolerant plants.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

unfold fold
I enjoy being outside and had my own garden. A landscaping business near me was hiring so I applied and ended up working with them for over ten years.

What types of customers have you worked with?

unfold fold
Most of my clients are actively gardening and need help keeping up with maintenance and new plantings. These customers love being in their gardens and want to enjoy them rather than feel overwhelmed by the amount of work needing to be done. Sometimes they work with me! We have a lot of fun together and the customer often feels inspired when I am there. I also have clients that are just too busy to take care of their garden. They love being able to enjoy the garden without having to put in the hours of weeding, pruning and other maintenance tasks. All of my clients are grateful for my work and my presence in their garden. I am consistent, respectful, kind and pleasant.

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

unfold fold
My daughter wanted a garden but didn't know where to start. She is very busy with her job and a new puppy so I encouraged her to keep it manageable. We did this by only using containers. I went with her when she picked out her plants. I made sure she only purchased plants that would be easy to care for and would have plenty of blooms for her to enjoy. I taught her how to plant in containers and we purchased the best potting soil for her plants. Now that the containers are planted her only responsibility is to make sure she keeps everything watered. She created a sitting area surrounded by the containers and she absolutely loves it!

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

unfold fold
Take your time interviewing potential gardeners. Talk with them, ask questions about their own gardens. Do you think this person will listen to what you want for your garden or will they just do what they want to do? Do they have enough experience to guide your decision making to ensure that you make realistic choices concerning which plants you buy, where you place them, and what maintenance will cost? Is the person you're considering enjoyable? They may be visiting your property on a regular basis. Hire someone that you enjoy having in your garden and who brings a smile to your day.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

unfold fold
Take a little time to think about what you like about your garden. Do you like the flowers or the foliage? Do you like the wildlife that your garden brings in? Do you like that you have gardens instead of grass? How do you enjoy your garden? Do you look at it from inside your house? Do you sit in the middle of your garden with your morning coffee? A good landscaper will take all of this information into account when caring for your garden.
