Q&A

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

unfold fold
Clients are billed by the hour. Payment terms are 50% down with signed contract and 50% upon completion of the project. Straightforward and competitive.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

unfold fold
Discuss the project in detail and walk the property so an accurate estimate can be prepared. Make suggestion based on site requirements, soil type, lighting, budget and timing.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

unfold fold
I have an A.A.S. degree from Hennepin Technical College in Landscape Design and Operations and a B.A. in Business from the University of MN. I am a member of the Minnesota Landscape Association, Wild Ones, two networking groups for design and professional gardening, volunteer at the Arboretum, the Green Expo and Home & Garden Show. I attend workshops during the off-season at least twice a week to keep up on new trends, plant introductions, invasive species, organic products, etc. But most importantly are the years of experience we have as a team.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

unfold fold
After 30 years in outside technology sales, I made a change to pursue my passion for gardening and my dream of having a business that revolved around horticulture. Native Eye was born!

What types of customers have you worked with?

unfold fold
Residential and commercial clients. Many clients have new properties or established landscape that they hire Native Eye Landscapes to design, restore, plant and maintain for the planting season. We also create customer containers for all four seasons.

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

unfold fold
A 5-day project renovating a landscape after a major remodel. Project included front yard replanting and replacing of aging shrubs and hedges and backyard patio, planters, garden beds and trees installed.

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

unfold fold
Ask for references, academic training, herbaceous knowledge, hands-on experience. Have an idea of what areas you would like to improve, color preferences, plant preferences, how the space will be utilized (entertaining, play area for children, dog exercise area, vegetable garden, fire pit, outdoor kitchen, patio dining, specimen gardens, pollinators, etc.) Have a soil test done so you know how the soil needs to be supplemented for drainage and organic matter.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

unfold fold
Communication is key to a successful project relationship. What colors, textures, heights or plant materials do you like? How much sun/shade? Do you want help keeping your landscape maintained? Maintaining an attractive landscape requires effort. Consider weekly or bimonthly maintenance to keep weeds and pests at bay. Spring is crazy busy so schedule early.
