Introduction

At HKF Construction, quality and communication are our top priorities. Growing up in a family of builders, I worked closely with my father, who had over 20 years of experience in the construction industry. From him, I learned the value of delivering high-quality work while maintaining strong, clear communication with clients. This passion for construction led me to continue his legacy—raising the standard and ensuring that every project exceeds expectations. We believe every project is more than just construction—it’s the fulfillment of a dream. Whether it’s a remodel or a new build, we work closely with homeowners, listen to their needs, and provide personalized solutions to bring their vision to life. As a women-led company, we are proud to be recognized as one of the best in Medford, backed by outstanding recommendations and reviews. Our commitment to clear communication, fair pricing, and efficient timelines ensures a smooth and stress-free experience—proving that great builders still exist. We proudly serve not only Medford but also all surrounding cities, including the entire Boston area.

Q&A

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

unfold fold
At HKF Construction, we prioritize transparency and fairness in our pricing. We offer competitive rates that reflect the quality and expertise we bring to each project. While some contractors may provide unusually low quotes, this often leads to issues such as incomplete work or subpar quality, ultimately causing frustration for clients. It’s essential to be cautious of exceptionally low prices, as they may indicate potential problems or even scams. Regarding discounts, we offer special promotions during company anniversaries or other events. Additionally, depending on the project’s size, we may provide discounts to accommodate our clients’ budgets. As for additional fees, we maintain a straightforward approach. Extra charges apply only for unforeseen circumstances or changes requested by the client during the project. For example, if a bathroom renovation wasn’t initially planned to include a window replacement, and the client later decides to add this, we will inform them of the additional cost before proceeding. We ensure that all changes and associated costs are approved by the client in advance, maintaining transparency throughout the process. Our commitment to fair pricing and clear communication has resulted in successful projects and satisfied clients. We believe that a well-informed client is a happy client, and we strive to uphold this principle in every project we undertake.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

unfold fold
Our typical process is as follows: 1. Initial Visit: We start with a complimentary on-site visit to assess the scope of work. This visit is free of charge. 2. Proposal Submission: After evaluating the project, we provide a detailed proposal outlining the work to be done. 3. Contract Agreement: If you accept the proposal, we proceed by drafting and signing a contract to formalize our agreement. 4. Permit Acquisition: If the project requires permits, we handle the entire permitting process on your behalf, coordinating with the building department to ensure all necessary approvals are obtained. 5. Material Planning and Design Consultation: While the permit is under review, we begin planning the procurement of materials. For projects like bathroom or kitchen remodels, we collaborate with you on design choices and place orders for necessary items. If architectural or engineering designs are needed, we engage the appropriate professionals during this phase to prepare the required plans. 6. Project Scheduling: Once the permit is approved, we inform you of the anticipated start date based on our availability and project schedule. 7. Construction and Communication: We commence work as scheduled, adhering to all permit requirements. Throughout the project, we maintain open communication, keeping you informed of each step and any developments. 8. Project Completion: Our goal is to complete the work efficiently and to the highest standards, minimizing disruption to your daily life.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

unfold fold
In addition to the experience I gained working alongside my father for many years, I have pursued various courses and contractor training programs to further my skills. I hold an Unrestricted Construction Supervisor License (CSL), which allows me to oversee a wide range of construction projects. With this license, I handle the entire permitting process, supervise job sites, and maintain direct communication with city inspectors. This means my clients don’t have to deal with any bureaucratic aspects; I manage everything, including scheduling and coordinating inspections with city officials. I am committed to continuous learning and daily improvement to ensure the highest quality of work for my clients.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

unfold fold
I got into this business because of my father. He worked as a General Contractor in Somerville, Massachusetts, for over 20 years, and I grew to love the profession by watching him. Seeing him work sparked my passion, and I knew I wanted to learn. He taught me everything he knew. For many years, I went with him to every job site, working alongside him, learning the trade hands-on. Eventually, I started doing jobs on my own—carpentry, painting, and a little bit of everything. Over time, I realized that while my clients were always happy with my work, I couldn’t expand or offer even higher quality on a larger scale because I was just one person. That’s when I started hiring more people. By then, I had stopped working with my father—he had retired and moved away—and I focused on growing my business. Today, my company not only delivers high-quality work but also ensures that every team member follows the same principles I learned early on. It’s not just about getting the job done; it’s about treating each home with the same respect and care as if it were our own. Cleanliness, attention to detail, and trustworthiness are essential to us. I only bring in people I would personally trust in my own home. We operate like a family, and I won’t allow anyone into a client’s home that I wouldn’t feel comfortable welcoming into mine. That level of care and integrity is what makes us different.

What types of customers have you worked with?

unfold fold
At HKF Construction, we work with a diverse range of clients, primarily families, including couples with and without children. Our clients are typically over 30 years old, many of whom work from home. We value individuals who are focused, peaceful, and respectful. We welcome all clients and treat everyone equally, regardless of circumstances.

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

unfold fold
The last project we completed was a full remodeling of the first floor of an apartment. The unit had been rented out for a long time, and the previous tenants left it in rough shape, so it needed a complete overhaul. We built two new bathrooms—one was a full remodel, and the other was entirely new. Both bathrooms were beautifully finished with floor-to-ceiling ceramic tile, waterproofing, and soundproofing for added comfort and durability. We also installed a brand-new laundry area. Throughout the apartment, we painted the bedrooms, living room, and kitchen, replaced all the old baseboards with new ones, installed new trim and doors, and refinished the flooring in every room. We also replaced two windows and installed a brand-new door. The kitchen cabinets were in poor condition, so we made necessary repairs to restore them. All inspections were successfully approved, and the final result was a modern, refreshed space that looks amazing. The entire project, including permitting, took three months to complete.

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

unfold fold
My advice to anyone looking to hire a provider in my field is to do thorough research. Reviews are extremely important, especially on Google, as they tend to be more reliable. It’s also essential to have a phone conversation to ask for recommendations and get a sense of the contractor’s professionalism. Unfortunately, I often help clients who have fallen victim to scams. Some contractors demand an unreasonable payment structure, taking a large deposit upfront and then disappearing. Others fail to prioritize the job, leaving projects incomplete for months, or simply lack the experience needed, ultimately disappointing the client. A home renovation—whether it’s a bathroom, kitchen, or any other space—is usually a long-planned dream, something people save for over time. When things go wrong, that dream can turn into a nightmare, causing not just financial loss but also emotional stress and family conflict. That’s why I always recommend thorough research. If possible, speak with past clients over the phone, check the contractor’s name and business history, verify insurance and licensing, look at photos of past work, and if you can, even visit an active job site. Taking these steps helps protect you and ensures that your investment leads to a successful and stress-free project.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

unfold fold
Before engaging with professionals about your project, it’s essential to consider the following key questions: 1. What is my budget for this project? Determining your available budget helps professionals provide solutions that align with your financial expectations. 2. What are my specific goals and expectations for this project? Clearly defining your objectives allows professionals to offer tailored advice and ideas that meet your needs. 3. What is the estimated timeline for project completion? Establishing a realistic timeline ensures that both you and the professional are aligned regarding project duration and deadlines. 4. What is the professional’s experience and expertise relevant to my project? Understanding the professional’s background helps assess their capability to handle your specific project requirements.
