Q&A

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

unfold fold
Given the highly particular nature of residential work, we do not provide estimates site unseen. Instead, we gather as much information as possible, visit the site, and provide an accurate estimate for the whole job. We accept cash, check, bank transfer,, and all major credit cards (2.75% surcharge).

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

unfold fold
We like to gather as much information as possible before settling on a bid. Typically, meeting with customers is the best way to get a firm sense of the job and how they would like to see it accomplished. In addition, we can help you think about aspects of the project you might not have thought of. These are useful conversations for both parties!

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

unfold fold
I am a college educated, licensed residential builder in Minnesota. I have more than 25 years experience in all aspects of residential building and remodeling. In a former life, I worked and taught in higher education for 15 years.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

unfold fold
I grew up on a farm and helped my dad and granddad with this type of work as a child. In my early twenties I started my first contracting business in Seattle, and ultimately brought the business to Minneapolis in the late 90's.

What types of customers have you worked with?

unfold fold
Mostly single family residences, but we also take occasional commercial jobs, with a specialty in commercial "break room" spaces.

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

unfold fold
I just finished renovating a kitchen for a wonderful client, transforming a dated, 50's galley kitchen to an open concept, modern beauty. With the load bearing wall removed, we were able to add an island, slide in range, display hood, all new custom cabinets. The result was more than an updated kitchen--the entire first floor of the home was modernized through the open concept and light. I truly enjoy these major transformations!

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

unfold fold
Find someone you are comfortable with and trust. Price is important, but you'll find it's all over the map. Go with your instinct about the individual!

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

unfold fold
First and foremost: is the contractor licensed and insured? Are they compliant with laws regarding lead abatement? This is the only way you can truly protect your home in the event of an accident or mishap. Secondly, can the contractor provide references for his/her work? Finally, does the contractor show genuine interest in you and your project?
