unfold fold

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

unfold fold
Diman Regional Vocational Technical High School - Graduate of Carpentry and Cabinetry Lead Carpenter Certification: Through the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI), ensuring high standards of expertise in Carpentry. OSHA Training: Promoting safe and healthy working conditions for clients and workers alike. LEAD Certification: Expertise in working safely with pre-1978 homes to meet lead safety regulations. How did you get started doing this type of work?

unfold fold
I started my training in a Vocational High School, and by my Junior year, I was part of a CO-OP program with the High School, working for a Home Builder at the age of 17 during school hours.

What types of customers have you worked with?

unfold fold
We have worked with individuals from diverse backgrounds, each with unique needs and desires for their projects.

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

unfold fold
This may be a bit biased since it's a project on my own property, but I’m building a pergola using robust 6x6 post and beams to cover a 20' x 12' area. We excavated the ground in this section, creating a full step-down below the surrounding grade. Additionally, we installed our outdoor firepit into a sunken "conversational pit" and developed a system to make the firepit "smokeless." The space will also feature an outdoor movie projector, transforming it into our very own outdoor movie theater. We take pride in being creative and crafting amazing transformations, both inside and outside the home!

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

unfold fold
You wouldn't hire a dentist to fix the grill on your car, so why settle for anything less than the right professional for your home? Choosing the right person/company for the job is a responsibility that homeowners should never take lightly or for granted.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

unfold fold
Easy answer for me! We like to be thorough and it doesn't hurt for you to be as well! Before talking to professionals about your project, customers should consider the following questions: 1. **What is my budget?** Determine a rough budget for the project, keeping in mind potential unforeseen costs. - Though you might not have a clue to what a project might cost it is important to know how much you can afford to put towards it. 2. **What are my specific goals and needs?** Be clear on what you want to achieve. Are you looking for a functional solution, a style update, or both? 3. **What is my timeline?** Consider how soon you want the project completed and whether any factors (e.g., seasons, availability of materials) might affect that timeline. -Discuss your ideal situation and we can see if we can attain that or how we can compromise. 4. **What are my must-haves vs. nice-to-haves?** Prioritize the features or elements that are non-negotiable compared to those that are flexible. 5. **Have I researched similar projects?** Understand the general scope, costs, and common challenges of the project to better communicate your vision. 6. **What are the potential challenges?** Consider potential complications such as zoning regulations, structural issues, or weather conditions that could impact the project. 7. **Do I have any specific materials, brands, or designs in mind?** Be prepared to discuss your preferences for materials, products, or styles, if you have them. 8. **What level of involvement do I want?** Decide whether you want to be hands-on throughout the project or prefer to leave the details to the professionals. 9. **Who will be responsible for permits and approvals?** Clarify who will manage the necessary permits and inspections required for the project. 10. **What kind of experience and credentials should I expect from a professional?** Ensure the professional has the right expertise and qualifications, especially for specialized work. Besides having a license and insurance, are they the right fit for you? By thinking through these questions, customers can have a more productive and clear discussion with professionals. This list can help you even if you decide to work with someone other than Built In RI.
