Q&A

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

unfold fold
Cup & Quill offers a range of coaching and cost per/word editing packages that can be custom-tailored to suit a client's needs and objectives. Our prices align with industry standards. However, Cup & Quill is not competing with editors offering the lowest rates; we're competing with the best providers of services we offer. Our rates align with our mission, which is to deliver outstanding service through highly credentialed staff in honorable ways. Our model (including the rates) reflects our belief that the best businesses are built around a commitment to engaging with clients as human beings, first and foremost, and not just word counts with dollar amounts assigned to them. Finally, no dollar amount will ever be high enough to convince us to help students cheat by writing essays for them. We adhere to the highest standards of academic integrity. We do not serve clients seeking help to engage in unethical practices under any circumstances.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

unfold fold
I schedule a free consultation with a client to clarify their goals and objectives and suggest the services that best fit their needs. If a client wishes to move forward, I send a proposal and an invoice. A 50 percent deposit is required to put the project in the queue and I match the project to the editor who is the best fit. The client sends the manuscript via email attached as an MS Word document.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

unfold fold
Cup & Quill's Senior Editors give clients' work a professor's touch. All have PhDs or are nearing completion of them, and years of experience as scholars, writers, and teachers.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

unfold fold
I've been an English professor for over twenty years. l teach writing and literature classes. I specialize in African American literature and culture, black men's writing in particular. I've delivered presentations all over Canada and the U.S., and published academic articles and one academic book. I am currently writing a second book, which began as creative nonfiction but decided it wants to be a memoir instead. I decided to become an editor and writing coach because I have a knack for helping people see what they already have within themselves that equips them to achieve their goals. I consider that a gift. I believe one's passions direct them to their gifts, and their gifts direct them to their purpose. Cup & Quill, LLC was born from my passions for writing, teaching, and service, my gifts in those areas, and what I believe is my purpose, which is helping others achieve their goals as writers.

What types of customers have you worked with?

unfold fold
Cup & Quill works with academic writers including undergraduates, graduate students, professors, and professional writers such as journalists and novelists. We also work with lay writers of all levels of experience and from all walks of life. We take great pleasure in helping people tell their stories. We welcome writers of faith and have two editors who focus primarily on devotionals, testimonies, self-help books, and other spiritually-based narratives.

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

unfold fold
I've worked with so many wonderful people. Among the most special was a woman who did not learn to read or write untill she was 38. She had written a 100k word memoir, which I edited. She published it and now has a second book almost ready for editing.

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

unfold fold
Take your time and talk to several editors to get a feel for each person. It takes time to find the right match, but that time is well spent. Understand that good writing is the outcome of a lot of work beyond the first draft. Good writing results from a thorough process comprised of multiple steps. Writing a draft is the first step. Congratulate yourself for writing a draft. Then prepare yourself to invest both time and money in getting your project to the next level.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

unfold fold
1. Am I open to honest feedback delivered to achieve an outcome as efficiently and effectively as possible? 2. What is the EXACT word count of my manuscript? 3. What are my objectives, and what timeline do I have in mind for achieving them?
