Introduction

Not all editors are the same. I DO NOT USE CHAP GPT ! Editing is a skill that requires finely tuned skills that AI is unable to achieve. What makes a great editor is someone who listens carefully to what you need. Listening skills combined with expertise in editing is a winning combination. I am that editor. I listen and deliver. Who better to edit your manuscript than a very experienced editor? I have been working as an editor for more than 30 years. My skills are unmatched given the broad range of areas I work in, from screenplays to dissertations, from memoirs to self-help books, from nonfiction to fiction. Each genre requires a different skill set and I have developed these skills over my very successful career. However, I am not qualified to edit poetry, which requires a different skill set. And if you are looking for help writing university applications it’s best you look elsewhere. I know my limitations and I will be upfront should you ask for something that I am unable to do. I use Word and Google Docs for straightforward editing and I use Final Draft for screenplays. I do not do formatting as that requires a different skill set. I received professional training when I started my career in copy editing 30 years ago. I have continued to work as a copy editor and proofreader, and writer when the documents needs some refinement. I'll make suggestions that you can accept or reject. You have the final say. If there is a better way to say something, I will say it. If the organization of the document needs some help, I will tweak it. If your document needs to follow APA or MLA or Turabian, I will follow the guidelines. Leave it to me! Please read my reviews. My clients can vouch for my professionalism and timeliness. If you'd like to chat with any of them, I can put you in touch. My fees are fair and I will work within your budget. I am open to negotiate the fee depending on the size of the project, how complicated the project is and your turnaround time. My minimum charge is $150. I am ready to move forward. I have never missed a deadline and will keep you informed of my progress. I am located on the West Coast and will respond to all communication in a timely manner. I start at 8 am Pacific Coast time. I enjoy my work and always look forward to taking on new projects.

Q&A

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

unfold fold
My fees reflect my years of experience. As an editor, copy editor and proofreader, I am professionally trained and have worked in the field for more than 30 years. My fees are competitive. Since Thumbtack uses a broad range of words for you to choose, for example, 3000 to 5000, I generally like to receive a sample of a client's writing to be able to assess the number of hours it will take to complete the project.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

unfold fold
I build trust with my clients by telling them about myself and my success in helping clients to reach their goals. Building a trusting relationship is key. I also like the client to tell me about themselves and their goals. Usually I offer to do a sample edit so the client can evaluate my editing skills and make an informed decision.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

unfold fold
As a copy editor and proofreader, I acquired my skills while working for an academic publisher. My skills were honed at Gage Publishing in Canada. I worked in concert with US publishers in Texas as the US edition of each book was adapted to the Canadian market. I also prepared academic manuscripts for publication and copy edited dissertations before the client defended their research.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

unfold fold
I began editing when I recognized the importance of communicating effectively with an audience. Editing allowed me to fine tune an author's writing. Generally when you are too close to the story it is difficult to stand back and critique it. That is my job!

What types of customers have you worked with?

unfold fold
The breadth of my client base is what makes my job interesting. I have worked on self-help books, memoirs, and travelogues. I have also edited religious manuscripts, cookbooks and historical fiction. Each manuscript requires accuracy and clarity. I come to each project with a breadth of knowledge, experience and dedication. I have also been hired to review and correct many kinds of documents, from highly classified material to corporate newsletters. I also have worked extensively with graduate students' dissertations and theses as well as essays and reviews. Each project brings a challenge, and I rise to the challenge each time.

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

unfold fold
I recently worked on a personal memoir that incorporated pivotal historic moments. The author did an excellent job in story telling but he needed some help with accuracy and organization as well as with grammar. It took about 3 months to complete the project.

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

unfold fold
All writers, including students, first time authors, and academics as well as seasoned authors and professionals, need to know that their manuscripts are in good hands. Trust is paramount in an author/editor relationship. I will communicate with you frequently and am ready to answer any questions you have. This is a joint project.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

unfold fold
As an editor I bring a questioning and analytical mind to ensure that the material is presented in the most effective way possible. I am detail oriented and will catch grammar and spelling errors that might slip by another reader. My job is to return the job free of errors. Customers should think about their priorities. How quickly do they want the project completed? How important is it for them to communicate with the editor? How much can they afford to spend to get this right the first time?
