Introduction

Drawing caricatures is my full time job! I also keep busy working on commissions in my studio. Clients send me photos and I can create a caricature illustration. I have even drawn people's pets as cartoons. I graduated from art school in Philadelphia and moved to Asheville,NC in 1989. I am comfortable drawing at small family get togethers and large corporate events.

Q&A

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

unfold fold
My pricing varies depending on the event's day of the week, location, who the client is and the type of event. I try to work with client's budgets but I am less flexible on high demand dates. My fees may be higher than other artists but I hope you understand this is my full time job and I have many years of experience. I am open to talking to you and make it work!

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

unfold fold
With all clients I listen to you needs and take it from there! I am working on mostly studio illustration work because of Coronavirus. Stay safe everybody!

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

unfold fold
I was born with 10% natural talent and with 90% hard work achieved my artistic accomplishments. I feel people who do not achieve their full potential are scared of failure or are perfectionists. How would you learn to ride a bike if you did not fall down a few times! Drawing caricatures is my second career. Before that I worked in Industrial Design. I graduated from the university of the Artist in 1989.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

unfold fold
One question I get while I draw at events is "How did you become a caricature artist and how long have you been drawing?" It is a combination of a lot of things. Growing up I was artistic and drew a lot. In art school I enjoyed figure drawings. I started drawing caricatures in my spare time and was interested in watching other caricature artists at events. Eventually I got hired by event planners and slowly built my skill level drawing at festivals and parties. When I left my day job at a design office I became a professional caricature artist.

What types of customers have you worked with?

unfold fold
I draw at over 150 live caricature events each year. The most common types of job I am hired are weddings, colleges events and company holiday parties.

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

unfold fold
Because of Coronavirus I am working in my studio on illustration projects. I am drawing six care worker and family themed coloring pages for Heart of Hospice. I also am illustration family caricatures from photos sent to me.

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

unfold fold
Hiring a caricature artist will make your party or event memorable. Face painting gets washed off and balloon animals eventually pop. A caricature drawing is something they can take home and frame. Everyone likes the surprise of seeing themselves drawn as a caricature. Good caricatures are drawn quickly and capture a person's likeness while being exaggerated at the same time. The people watching the caricatures come to life are always amazed. Most children have never seen a real life artist drawing in their presence. I have had many clients tell me after I drew at their event that they were surprised the caricature entertainment was a success. Caricatures are always a hit.
