What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

I keep it simple by estimating an entire project up front based on a per-hour cost. The client knows the timeline and cost in advance, and what to expect if overruns occur. I keep my prices very reasonable and offer discounts for small businesses and non-profits.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

After responding to a request with information on price and what I will provide I have a phone conversation and/or meeting to establish the client's needs and expectations. It is essential to understand who they are and how the best results can be achieved. I ask a series of questions to determine their likes and dislikes. I then provide design choices, revisions as needed, and final product in all required formats.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I studied Fine Arts in college and have been in the computer-generated design arena for over 40 years. I am a certified expert in Adobe CC Illustrator and Photoshop, expert level in Powerpoint, and I stay on top of advances in graphic software, mostly through online training and hands-on work.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

My mother insists my first word was "pencil".

What types of customers have you worked with?

After a long career in advertising and corporate support I am realizing my dream of illustrating children’s books. I also still work with small businesses developing branding, illustration, and presentations for a wonderful variety of industries.

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

I recently completed the illustrations for a very unique and original children’s book (A Very Lappie Christmas) about a family of Finnish Laphound puppies that help Santa deliver his toys. The 24 illustrations were drawn digitally in Adobe Illustrator. I used as inspiration early 20th century travel posters, incorporating bold colors and shapes in motion. The work was completed on schedule in six weeks. Several of the illustrations are on view in my profile.

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

Do your homework. Pick an illustrator or designer because you love their work, feel comfortable with them, and check their references. Talk to the artist, on the phone or Skype so you know it is a good match.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

What is the image you want to project through your business or project? Are you making it easy for your customers to understand your concept, service or product quickly? How do you want to project who you are through a graphic image(s)?
