Q&A

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

unfold fold
I usually price each project per hour spent. If a client has a budget in mind we can adjust accordingly and I can do a flat fee to best accommodate.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

unfold fold
I offer a few different kinds of creative services, but the following is a general overview of my process. I always start by checking in with my clients to see what they are picturing, what problems they are trying to solve, and what visuals or other work inspires them. Once I know the style my client is looking for I will sketch or layout some ideas on my computer. Once we agree on a direction and have the final design ready I will send the files, paint the finished piece, or whatever else is needed to ensure that they are ready to use and enjoy the final piece. (whether it's a graphic, photo, mural, or illustration) I look at each project as a collaboration and am flexible with this process based on each client's needs.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

unfold fold
I studied Fine Arts and graduated with a Digital Design degree from the University of Cincinnati's DAAP program. I started my own business in college and have taken many more art and business related classes since.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

unfold fold
I started doing this work in college during 5 different internships. My business was started in order to sell my artwork and photographs. From there, people started coming to me for specific projects they had in mind.

What types of customers have you worked with?

unfold fold
My customers vary from individuals, to local businesses, and bigger corporations as well. The majority of my clients are artisans and entrepreneurs.

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

unfold fold
One of my favorite projects was working with a yoga teacher who was opening up her own studio. We designed a mural for a 30' x 12' wall that the students would practice next to. It was a quick turnaround as there was a lot of construction happening around the wall itself. From beginning to end, we were able to get it finished in a week.

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

unfold fold
Don't be afraid to tell the designer exactly what you are looking for. On the other hand let him or her know if you are open to new ideas and looking for guidance. I love when my clients come to me with visuals, other projects, or pieces of my own work that inspires them. These can all provide productive starting points for the project. Keep the communication open because designers want to make sure you are satisfied with the final result.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

unfold fold
- What is the purpose of this project? - Who is the audience I'm targeting? - What are the current problems that need to be solved? - Is there anything out there that matches the feel or style of my idea to provide the designer for direction? - What am I willing to spend on this? - What will the final format be? - When do I need this project finished? - How do I want to communicate during this job (email, phone, in-person)
