Introduction

This is a great job but not everyone can do it. It takes experience reading a dance floor to keep the dance floor busy. Don't trust your event to an amateur.

Q&A

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

unfold fold
Yes, My wedding season rates for Saturdays: $150 per hour plus $150 for travel, setting up, and tearing down. An additional charge may be incurred for difficult setups or long drive times but you will know that before we sign the agreement. I don't believe in surprises. A small deposit is usually required to reserve the date. Off night rates, off season rates, and non-profit rates are available.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

unfold fold
I reply to your inquiry and send an email or text. We arrange an appointment so the couple can attend.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

unfold fold
Nothing formal, I've learned to read the crowd and play the right songs over the years. I keep up to date with technology because it makes the job easier. I study the charts.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

unfold fold
I was between bands and one of my friends was working for WJJL and was looking for a radio jock.

What types of customers have you worked with?

unfold fold
Wedding receptions, graduation parties, school reunions, family reunions, birthday parties, fund raisers for non-profits, retirement parties.

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

unfold fold
I recently did a party for Kim and Nicole J. Kim contacted me about 14 days prior to the event. It was arranged last minute (about 14 days). She found a tent company, a caterer, a photographer, and myself. It all came together. It was apparent that she had done a great job of arranging the components but didn't know what order to do things to have the party run smoothly. I provided that service for her as well as managing the dance floor. It was a fun party without any snags. See their reviews.

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

unfold fold
Make sure they can provide some reviews. The people who will attend your wedding reception will remember the food and if they had fun at the party. You want a DJ who can relate and read the crowd.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

unfold fold
How do you see the sequence of events at my reception? Will you set up before the guests arrive? Do you carry backup equipment to ensure my event will be a success if a piece of your equipment dies? Will you be willing to wear a tux, suit, etc.? Do you take requests?
