Introduction

Ken’s Masonry is an independent unlicensed contractor bringing you 20 years of experience in a wide variety of masonry services. We specialize in all types of masonry construction and repair such as fence block wall repair, retaining wall construction, brick and stone veneers, concrete slabs and pads, stucco installation, stucco repair and paint. My passion is designing and building custom fireplaces, mailboxes and other projects that require talent and add beauty to a home. I get the most satisfaction from seeing the look on a customer's face when they witness the transformation of their project. Much of my work is by referrals because of the quality of service I provide. You don't pay until the job is done and you are happy!

Q&A

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

unfold fold
My pricing varies by materials used and the type of project requested. My advice would be to include pictures and measurements whenever possible. This is the best way I can at least give a ballpark estimate and avoid unpleasant surprises for all parties involved.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

unfold fold
I prefer to get a good understanding of the customer's expectations before starting. I will usually request pictures, or at least ask some discovery questions before giving a quote because without the proper info, I could ruin my credibility with a quote that is too high or too low. The challenge with a tool that allows customers to get bids sight unseen is that they can often be misled by companies that will put a number out there, just to get their foot in the door. I will only give a dollar amount if I can at least see a picture and understand the size and complexity of the job, and even then I make it clear that it's only an estimate.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

unfold fold
I have some community college, but the training and education that made the difference in this business was from the International Union of Brick Layers and Allied Craft Workers. And of course my dad, who was a brick layer and started teaching me the trade at 8 years old.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

unfold fold
My father was a brick layer, so I grew up learning the trade. I guess you could say it's in my blood.

What types of customers have you worked with?

unfold fold
I was in the union, so I have experience working on commercial projects and have the knowledge and experience to build or repair anything and everything, but I prefer to work with home owners these days. I enjoy the personal aspect of improving someone's home and the instant gratification of customer satisfaction.

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

unfold fold
I would let them know they get what they pay for. I may not be the cheapest bid, but I also don't reduce the quality of my product to make it stretch, leaving the home owner with a finished product that deteriorates within a couple years. I don't skimp on materials or labor, so I may not be the smallest bid, but guarantee satisfaction before I get paid and the quality I provide is worth it. Also, I will negotiate, so don't count me out over a couple hundred dollar difference. Let's talk about it and if I can't adjust my price, I can at least explain why.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

unfold fold
Customers should really know who the person is by checking out their website, Googling them, etc. The more good reviews and feedback, the better,
