What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

Most hardwood "companies" are a small outfit usually consisting of one or two guys. Sometimes those companies are good, but far too often they're not and customers are left with either an unfinished product or inferior product...or no product in the worse scenarios.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

unfold fold
Does the contractor carry liability insurance? If not, you could be in for big trouble should anything go wrong with your project. Ask the contractor for a copy of their liability insurance. Be sure to check when the policy expires. It may even be worth a call to the agent/agency that insures them. That way you can be sure the policy is current and in good standing. Does the contractor use full-time employees, sporadic sub-contractors, or are they a hybrid that uses the same sub-contractors every week? Many companies will claim they use only full-time employees. If so, you may want to request a copy of their workers comp insurance. And, it is not a bad idea to call the agent/agency that provides their workers comp insurance to be sure they are current on that policy, too.
